Returning students -

Room Selection for housing assignments for 2025-2026 will take place late Fall 2024 (special housing applications due) and Spring 2025 (general Room Selection for singles, doubles, triples, and quads).
Please see the Room Selection Timeline information for full listing of dates and deadlines.
Process Quick View -
  1. Complete your Housing Agreement and Room Type Application
  2. Roommate Match
  3. Receive your time slot 24-hours in advance of each selection
Applications become available on the following dates:
  • November 2024: Special Housing Accommodation forms for 2025-2026 will available.
  • November 25, 2024: Special Housing Applications become available (ILS, Crossroads, Swedish House).
  • Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 12pm/noon: Housing Agreement Available (Note: Submission timestamp will impact your room selection time slot!).
Special housing applications (Deadline: Jan 1, 2025):
  • ILS House applications will become available November 25, 2024 and will be due January 1, 2025.
  • Crossroads Community (International Center) will become available November 25, 2024 and will be due January 1, 2025
  • Swedish House applications will become available November 25, 2024 and will be due January 1, 2025
  • Off-campus housing applications will become available November 25, 2024 and will be due January 1, 2025.
    • Any student who does not meet a qualifier for release is requesting to be added to the wait list. The wait list for off-campus housing will only be activated if all on-campus housing is filled - plan on being a campus resident. You must also still complete the Housing Agreement and room selection processes via the housing portal. Failure to participate in room selection process means that housing will be assigned to you. Note: signing a lease is NOT a qualifier for off-campus housing. If you are not approved for off-campus release, you will be assigned a room assignment and be responsible for the cost of residential housing/meal plan requirements.
Submit your Housing Agreement (available Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 12pm/noon):

 Housing Agreement (Returning student housing form) opens - priority for time slots is assigned based on class year (year in residence) and then by application received timestamp.

In the Housing Portal (housing.gac.edu), under the Application/Housing Form, choose Housing Agreement (Required). Review the College Housing Agreement, Sign, and Continue. The next question is crucial! Which type of housing (room type) will you be applying for:

  • Single room;
  • Two-person room (Doubles);
  • Two-person room (Doubles) - Open Gender;
  • Three-person room (Triple);
  • Three-person room (Triple) - Open Gender;
  • Four-person room (Apt, Suite, Quads); or
  • Assign my 2024-2025 space for me.

How you answer this question will determine your Room Selection type and ability to roommate match. For Doubles and Triples, the 'open gender' option allows for roommate matching regardless of assigned gender, and housing placements in designated areas of Rundstrom and/or Uhler (based on demand/availability). All four-person units are open gender roommate matching except for Uhler Quads.

If you need to change your response, you’ll need to re-visit your housing agreement and re-submit.

The Room-Type Application is a separate step from the Housing Agreement! You will need to complete an 'application' for that specific Room-type to be added to that selection and be able to roommate match with students who applied for the same type. If it says you are not eligible to roommate match, check back under Applications to make sure your room-type shows as Completed:

If you choose to have your space assigned for you, you will receive a room assignment and roommate match over the summer (matched based on your age, class year, and roommate profile). You would also select this option if you will be study away for Fall 2024.

Assemble Group and Roommate Matching (Deadline: March 5, 2025):
  • After submitting a room-type application in your Housing Portal, go to Roommate Selection, choose Select Roommates, make sure your term at the top is set to Fall 2024, and then search/match with your desired roommates.To search for a specific person, we recommend searching by Gustavus email address.
    • To search by personal profile criteria, we recommend selecting one option that is *most* important to you, the more specific your request the fewer options you will see. You can update your own roommate profile under Personal Information/Profile. My Info lets you update the answers other students can search by. Roommate Profile has an open text field where you can list if you have other more specific requests.

  • You will only be able to search for roommates who have submitted for the same housing type. So if you submitted for a Double but your roommate submitted for an Open-Gender Double, you will not be able to find each other to mutually match.
  • All roommate groups/pairs must be finalized in advance of the room selection, if you do not have a fully-matched roommate group that matches the housing type you are requesting (if you only have 2 mutually matched roommates, you will not be able to select a three- or four-person unit, and will forfeit your assigned time slot).
  • Be sure to check your roommate profile - it must be set to Display My Information to be searchable for roommate matching. Once you have a matched roommate pair/group, please set your profile to Do NOT display me so your information is set to private and you do not continue to come up in roommate searches of those still looking for a roommate.

Make your plan!
  • Review all the housing options for your roommate groups (four, three, or two-person units). Be realistic in your planning -- four-person apartments will be selected by rising Seniors, those who will be Sophomores and Juniors next year should research your options for double rooms.
  • You can view photos and floor plans on the Residential Life web page: gustavus.edu/reslife/residences
Receive your room selection time slot/Room Selection (24 hours in advance of selection date, by room-type):

See full timeline for opening dates for each housing type (as well as notification dates for special housing applicants).

  • Time slots are assigned based on a random ranking by class year (year in residence); averaged between your roommate pair/group).
  • Your roommate group/pairing will be assigned a time slot (posted to the housing portal) at least one day before the room selection for the type of housing that you applied to select. At your allotted date and time between 5pm-10pm, you (or any one of your paired roommates/roommate group) will have 2-3 minutes to select and confirm a housing selection for your group until the next time slot opens.
  • You must fill the entire room/apartment with a fully mutually-matched roommate group at this time. Groups that do not meet the required group size will not be able to select spaces they cannot fully fill (a set of two matched roommates cannot select a four-person unit). If all available housing units of that type get filled, you will have time before the next selection type to regroup your roommate pairings as needed and receive a new selection date/time (or once all posted units are filled, you will be placed in a housing assignment over the summer).

If you have questions, please contact the Residential Life office: in person the lower level Jackson Campus Center 105, via e-mail at reslife@gustavus.edu, or by phone at 507-933-7529.

Housing Types

Room Selection - Housing/Room Types

Apartments, Suites & Quads

Four-person units are available in Arbor View Apartments, Chapel View Townhomes, College View Apartments, Southwest Hall suites, Southwest Hall apartments, and Uhler Hall Quads.

  • College View apartments, Arbor View apartments and Southwest apartments are four-person units consisting of two double bedrooms and include a kitchen and full bathroom.
  • Chapel View Townhomes consist of four single bedrooms per unit and include a kitchen and full bathroom.
  • Southwest Suites consist of four single rooms around a common living space (no full kitchen). At the time a Southwest Suite is selected, the individual room assignment of each student must be indicated (i.e. 216A, 216B, 216C, 216D).
  • Uhler Quads: A limited number of four-person units are available in Uhler Hall, requiring four students of the same gender. These units have two double bedrooms (bunked) and a living area, but do not have a kitchen or personal restroom.
  • The housing available in the Arbor View Apartments, Chapel View Townhomes, College View Apartments, and Southwest Hall are open to any 4-person roommate group regardless of gender/gender identity. Groups attempting to select a four-person unit must have all mutually matched in the Roommates/Suitemates section.

Groups attempting to select a four-person unit MUST have matched in the  housing portal with the correct number of roommates. Groups selecting for four-person units will receive a selection time slot based on random assignment by class year (year in residence). Students are not guaranteed a space in four-person housing, even as a Senior. Based on class size and number of four-person spaces available, students should anticipate that all units will be selected by rising Seniors. Sophomores and Juniors should focus on selection for Doubles in housing.

You can view floor plans and photos on the Residential Life web page at: gustavus.edu/reslife/residences

Triples

Triples (three-person units) are available in Uhler Hall and Rundstrom Hall.

*Open gender triples (roommate matching regardless of gender) are available as an option in the Housing Agreement/Application, and mutual matches will select from rooms in Uhler (based on number of requests/availability).

Use the Room Selection Tab in your housing portal to search for Roommates/Suitemates (search by first or last name, or by email). You can also search by a number of other criteria per your preferences.

You can view floor plans and photos on the Residential Life web page at: gustavus.edu/reslife/residences

Singles

Single rooms (most rooms in Gibbs, all rooms in Sohre, and few rooms in Uhler) are rooms with a singe bed, desk, dresser and are assigned one occupant. The are billed at a higher rate than double-occupancy spaces. The number of available singles is impacted by the needs for special housing accommodations, so it is not possible to guarantee space in a particular floor or building will be available. At the time of your selection, you will see any available spaces that match your gender designation.

You can view floor plans and photos on the Residential Life web page at: gustavus.edu/reslife/residences

Doubles

Doubles/two-person rooms are available in the following buildings:

*Open gender doubles (roommate matching regardless of gender) are available as an option in the Housing Agreement/Application, and mutual matches will select from rooms in Prairie View or Uhler (based on number of requests/availability).

Your roommate pairing must be confirmed (mutually matched) in your housing portal before in order to be able to select a room during a selection time slot. Search for a specific roommate (search by first or last name, or by email) and 'request roommate' to send a roommate match request, all requests must be mutually confirmed. If you do not have a specific roommate in mind, choose your top criteria and search by responses submitted under profile information.

Off-Campus Housing

Gustavus is a fully residential institution. A very small number of students may be granted permission to live off-campus because of meeting one or more qualifiers in our residency policy.

Please review the Off-Campus Housing Process for more information.

The off-campus application deadline for 2025-2026 will be due January 1, 2025 via the application in the housing portal (available to those who have previously been approved based on meeting a qualifier). If you believe you meet one of the qualifiers but the application does not show up for you in the housing portal, email reslife@gustavus.edu with your circumstances. Those who do not meet one of the qualifiers for off-campus housing are applying only to be wait-listed. The wait list is only activated if all on-campus housing for the following academic year is filled by incoming and returning students, so off-campus applicants must participate in the full room selection process and find out over the summer if there is an option to be released for off-campus housing. Signing a lease is NOT a qualifier for off-campus housing. You will still receive a room assignment and be responsible for costs of both housing contracts - do not sign any lease agreements! The college is not obligated to grant permission to students who have entered into rental agreements before proper approval has been given.

Studying Abroad, Student Teaching or Internship away from campus

  • Those who will be studying abroad or on off-campus college programs in the Spring of the following academic year (including student teaching or having an internship away from St.Peter) must participate in room selection for the Fall that they will be on campus.
  • Those requesting to be released from campus for Student Teaching or an off-campus internship in the Fall should apply/notify via the Off Campus Housing Application (requests will be verified with the appropriate departments).
  • Those who will be away for the Fall semester should not select a room (or you will be charged for that housing!), but rather will be contacted at the end of the Fall semester about their returning housing options. If you know of someone abroad in the Spring where the group would like you to take that space when you return, you can notify Residential Life at reslife@gustavus.edu
  • Those students who wish to apply to live off-campus upon their return to Gustavus for Spring Semester must participate in the off-campus application process described previously.

Gender and Housing

  • The housing available in the Arbor View Apartments, Chapel View Townhomes, College View Apartments, and Southwest Suites/Apartments chosen during 4-person room selection are open to any 4-person roommate group regardless of gender/gender identity. Groups attempting to select a four-person unit must have all mutually matched in the housing portal. Selection time slots are based on group ranking by class year (year in residence).
  • Doubles and Triples housing will have an open gender housing option (indicate on your Housing Agreement that is the room type you will be applying for) to mutually match with a roommate regardless of gender for selection of a room in Uhler (doubles/triples) or Prairie View (doubles) - depending on space available and number of applicants.
  • Those with questions or who wish to discuss gender and housing options can contact the Residential Life office any time. Residential Life will work with the student to find the best housing option of what is available. Please e-mail reslife@gustavus.edu.
