Residential Life Staff

The Residential Life office is located on the lower level of the Jackson Campus Center. Our central office staff consists of our Director, Assistant Director, four Area Coordinators and an Administrative Assistant. We are committed to a student-focused approach to campus housing. Director of Residential Life

Charlie Potts: Charlie is beginning his fifth year as Director in the fall of 2015. A graduate of Gustavus, he is currently a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota. Charlie oversees all aspects of the residential program at Gustavus. He has worked in student affairs at Minnesota colleges for the last decade.

Assistant Director of Residential Life

Melissa Shugarman: Melissa joined the Residential Life staff in July 2015. A graduate of Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) and UW-LaCrosse, Melissa has worked at Concordia and the University of St. Thomas. The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for the Collegiate Fellow program and the development of leadership programs (like Hall Council) in addition to coordinating the Break and Summer Housing program.

Area Coordinators

Area Coordinators are full-time professional staff members who live on campus and are responsible for oversight and management of specific areas of campus. The Area Coordinators supervise the Collegiate Fellows, assist with facilities management, oversee the conduct process for their areas and are available for conversations, support and to address concerns from students.

Mandy Rae Fairbrother: Mandy Rae serves as the Area Coordinator for Norelius Hall and the ILS Core Value Houses on 7th Street. Mandy Rae is starting her first year at Gustavus in the fall of 2015 after finishing her master's degree program at Western Illinois University. Mandy Rae lives in Norelius Hall.

Lindsay Henderson: Lindsay serves as the Area Coordinator for Uhler Hall, Rundstrom Hall & Pittman Hall. She lives in Uhler Hall with her partner Peter. Lindsay is starting her first year at Gustavus in the fall of 2015 after finishing her master's degree program at Minnesota State University Mankato.

Danielle Paris: Danielle serves as the Area Coordinator for College View Apartments, Chapel View Townhomes, Arbor View Apartment, Southwest Hall and Sohre Hall. Danielle lives in Southwest. She is beginning her second year at Gustavus in the fall of 2015 after completing her master's degree program at Iowa State University. Danielle attended North Dakota State University for her undergraduate education.

Erik Heller : Erik serves as the Area Coordinator for the Complex (North, Sorensen and Gibbs Halls) as well as Prairie View Hall and the Carlson International Center. Erik lives in North Hall. He is beginning his second year at Gustavus in the fall of 2015. Erik graduated from Minnesota State-Mankato and finished his master's degree at Western Illinois University last spring.

FAIRs are live-in, professional staff or faculty who are charged with actively creating and sustaining living environments conducive to the learning, growth, and development of students by facilitating learning outside-the-classroom, promoting community development and serving as a resource and mentor to students. Collegiate Fellows

Collegiate Fellows (CFs) are carefully selected upper-class students assigned to a floor or section who are charged with actively creating and sustaining a living environment conducive to the learning, growth, and development of students. CFs have a variety of responsibilities: peer counseling, facilitating activities and programs that encourage the development of a strong, positive, and inclusive community in the hall, acting as general resources and referral agents.

Residential Life Student Employees

Student staff members work in the Residential Life Office through the College's student employment program. Their job includes receptionist duties, answering telephones, data entry, web work, bulletin board creation, filing and general office duties.
