Residential Life Staff

The Residential Life office is located in Jackson Campus Center 105. Our central office staff consists of our Director, two Assistant Directors, three Area Coordinators and an Administrative Assistant. We are committed to a student-focused approach to campus housing. Director of Residential Life

Anthony Bettendorf: Anthony joined the Residential Life staff in July 2018. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Anthony earned a master's degree at Western Illinois University and his PhD from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. He has worked at the University of Minnesota and the University of Iowa prior to starting at Gustavus. Anthony oversees all aspects of the residential program at Gustavus including all administrative, programmatic, operations, and supervision of the Residential Life Office. 

Assistant Directors of Residential Life

Chris Mueller: Chris joined the Residential Life staff in September 2020. Chris earned his B.S. from Central Michigan University, and his master's degree from Kansas State University. Prior to Gustavus, Chris worked as a high school teacher, a residence hall coordinator, and as the Director of Leadership and Education for Beta Theta Pi. Chris is responsible for the Collegiate Fellow program including selection, training, and professional development, and the development and management of the Hall Council program.

Danny Sandberg: Danny joined the Residential Life staff in July 2017. A graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead (both B.S. and M.S.), Danny has worked at St. Cloud State, Augustana University, and Dakota Wesleyan University. Danny is responsible for housing operations in the Residential Life office, including room assignments and occupancy management, and coordinating the ILS House program.

Area Coordinators

Area Coordinators are full-time professional staff members who live on campus and are responsible for oversight and management of specific areas of campus. The Area Coordinators supervise the Collegiate Fellows, assist with facilities management, oversee the conduct process for their areas and are available for conversations, support and to address concerns from students.

Elizabeth Barry: Elizabeth joins the Residential Life staff November 2020 after completing her master's degree program at University of Nevada, Reno and serving there as a Resident Director and then Coordinator for Support Operations for the Department of Residential Life, Housing and Food Service. Lizzie serves as the Area Coordinator for Rundstrom, Uhler, Pittman, and Sohre Halls. 

Kurt Schliep: Kurt joins the Residential Life staff November 2020 after completing his master's degree program at Minnesota State University in Mankato. Kurt serves as the Area Coordinator for Norelius Hall, Arbor View, College View, and Chapel View.

Abbey Lane: Abbey joined the Residential Life staff in August 2017 after completing her master's degree program at the University of North Dakota. Abbey serves as the Area Coordinator for Complex (North/Gibbs/Sorensen Halls), Southwest, Prairie View, and Carlson International Center, home of the Crossroads Program. 

Administrative Assistant

Lisa Octigan: Lisa is the office manager and coordinates keys, budget tracking, room assignment tracking, etc. Lisa joined the Residential Life staff in August 2018, after working for Campus Safety for almost ten years.

Collegiate Fellows

Collegiate Fellows (CFs) are carefully selected upper-class students assigned to a floor or section who are charged with actively creating and sustaining a living environment conducive to the learning, growth, and development of students. CFs have a variety of responsibilities: peer counseling, facilitating activities and programs that encourage the development of a strong, positive, and inclusive community in the hall, acting as general resources and referral agents.

Residential Life Student Employees

Student staff members work in the Residential Life Office through the College's student employment program. Their job includes receptionist duties, answering telephones, data entry, filing, and general office duties. Contact reslife@gustavus.edu if you are interested in being a Residential Life receptionist student employee for the upcoming academic year.
