Syllabuspalooza!

It's the last week before classes begin so it must be time to "finish" up our syllabi! Join the Kendall Center for Syllabuspalooza in Konferensrum from 8am-5pm on Monday, August 29. Fuel up on coffee and treats before heading back you your office to work or stay enjoy the camaraderie of working alongside others putting the last (or first) touches on their syllabi for Fall 2016.

New Faculty Orientation Day

New Faculty Orientation Day will be held in the Heritage Room on Tuesday, August 30 from 8:45 to 4 p.m. This day will allow new faculty to meet other faculty new to Gustavus, to be introduced to important offices they'll need to know (the Registrar, for example), and have more general conversations about their work here with returning faculty. Although the week before classes begin can be incredibly busy and even stressful, this orientation is designed to help new faculty feel more comfortable and knowledgeable about Gustavus, so we expect and look forward to their participation.

Faculty Development Day

The Kendall Center invites all faculty to attend Faculty Development Day on Wednesday, August 31in the Heritage Room beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing through lunch. Faculty Development Day is a half-day event that showcases good teaching practices, new developments in technology, pedagogical work being done on the campus, and other resources of interest to faculty.

Faculty Writing Retreats at Gustavus and ASI

The Kendall Center is hosting monthly Writing Retreats at Gustavus and at ASI. September Writing Retreats will be held on Saturday, September 17 at ASI and at Gustavus (Board Room). Faculty can sign up for a full day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. devoted to writing. We’ll provide breakfast and lunch. Please see attached or visit the Kendall Center website for upcoming dates and info. Please reserve a space with Cathy Blaukat (cblauka@gustavus.edu) for one or all of the writing retreats.

2 Day Faculty Writing Retreat - October 1 and 2

The Kendall Center is sponsoring a Writing Retreat for faculty on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2 at Mount Olivet Conference and Retreat Center in Farmington, MN. This is a great opportunity to focus on your writing. The retreat is open to all faculty and space is limited and will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Please RSVP to Cathy Blaukat (cblaukat@gustavus.edu) by FRIDAY, September 16.

First Friday Faculty Social

The Kendall Center invites all faculty to the First Friday Faculty Social on Friday, September 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Get to know new faculty, reconnect with colleagues, and celebrate the start of the new year. Refreshments provided. Hosted by the John S. Kendall Center for Engaged Learning and the Office of the Provost.

New Faculty Orientation Session

Join us on Thursday, September 8 for a New Faculty Orientation Session. Topic is Checking In. An open‐ended opportunity for new faculty to get to know each other, share their experiences in the first week, and have questions answered in a supportive environment (e.g. J-term proposals are due the next day). What are your intentions for the semester and how might your goals be reached? Free lunch at the Three Crowns Buffet, then meet in the St Peter Room, 12:30 to 1:20 p.m

Faculty Shop Talk

Paul Saulnier (Professor, Physics) will present at Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, September 16. His talk entitled, " Joined at the Hip from Birth: A Story of Entangled Photons " will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Feel free to arrive any time after 4:15 p.m. The abstract for this and future talks may be viewed at here.

New Faculty Orientation Session

Join us on Thursday, September 22 for a New Faculty Orientation Session. Topic: Grading rubrics and policies. How might we grade assignments strategically? We can save time while giving students valuable feedback. We will also discuss the nuts and bolts of grading policies in general. A variety of assignment types are discussed. Presenter: Kate Knutson, Political Science, FTS Director. Free lunch at the Three Crowns Buffet, then meet in the Heritage Room, 12:30 to 1:20 p.m..

If you didnt' received a 2016-2017 Kendall Center calendar or would like another one,
please send an email reqauest to Cathy Blaukat.  Print Services had a problem with
a handful of calendars, so if you received a "wonky" calendar let me Cathy know that
as well and we'll drop a new one in campus mail for you!
