Eastern European and Eurasian Studies
The Eastern European and Eurasian Studies major familiarizes students with the languages, literatures, cultures, civilizations, histories, and economics of the region stretching from the eastern half of Europe through to the Pacific Ocean and from the Arctic to subtropical regions of the Caucasus. An understanding of this exciting and often enigmatic area of the world is best derived from a thorough study of all aspects of its compositions—from the earliest appearance of the Slavs in history to recent dynamic political and economic changes. Students take classes in a variety of disciplines pertaining to this rich and culturally diverse region, including study of a regional language such as Russian.
Eastern European and Eurasian Studies Program Statement on Russia's Invasion of Ukraine (2024)
The Eastern European and Eurasian Studies Program at Gustavus Adolphus College condemns in strongest terms the unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and the senseless suffering, destruction, and damage it has caused so far. The actions of the Russian Government represent a shocking disregard for human life, truth, justice, and freedom that are fundamental common human values.
As scholars, we strongly reject any justification of conflict based on artificially construed false narratives and distorted interpretations of Russian and Ukrainian history. We support all those in Ukraine and those who have been forced to flee their homeland, who are suffering and will continue to suffer, because of this invasion. We encourage our students to learn about the history of the region to combat disinformation that seeks to erase Ukrainian identity and justify this assault, and support efforts to preserve Ukraine’s intellectual and cultural heritage during this critical time.
