About the Department
Exploring the Molecular World
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) explore the complexities of the living world on a molecular level. This interdisciplinary program is for students interested in the intersection of chemistry and biology, including biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, genetics, cell biology, and pharmacology. One of the longest-standing biochemistry and molecular biology programs in the Midwest, students learn in lab-centered courses. These hands-on experiences develop independence and sophistication to create top-level experimental scientists. The Gustavus program has prepared students to excel whether they're starting their career right after graduation or going on to medical school or graduate studies in competitive molecular biology and biochemistry programs in Minnesota, nationally, or around the world.
The major is accredited by the field's professional organization American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). ASBMB accreditation is a national distinction that will be recognized by graduate and professional schools and science industry employers that you are well-prepared to excel at work in the field.
