Why Live on Campus?
It goes beyond convenience and camaraderie. Living in residential housing—which is required of all full-time Gusties—delivers a host of other benefits:
- Location: Find yourself in the center of a close-knit community: friends down the hall, a five-minute walk to class, steps from the fitness center, the library, coffee shops, and campus dining. Living on campus makes life easier.
- Safety: You can be at ease knowing that you are in the company of faculty, staff, and other students who are concerned about one another’s safety on our inclusive campus.
- Community: The Hill is buzzing seven days a week with activities both planned and spontaneous. Most Gusties stay on campus for the weekends.
- Personal Development: From time management to problem-solving, you’ll gain new skills for your journey. Living and learning alongside other Gusties will expand your world with new perspectives.
- Support and Guidance: Collegiate Fellows are students who have been there and done that, ready to pitch in with resources and support. They help grow the Gustavus community and foster a respectful, fun residential atmosphere.

Where You’ll Live
Newly Admitted Students
All first-year students share double-occupancy rooms in either Pittman Hall (built-in wardrobes and in-room sinks) or Norelius Hall (room pods arranged around central lounges).
Choosing a Hall
No two halls are the same at Gustavus. Options for returning students range from singles, doubles and triples, to suites and apartments for Seniors.
Picking a Room
Returning students, you’ll be able to assemble your roommate(s) and apply for your preferred room type ( double, triple, or four-person space) in a carefully timed annual process. Limited single rooms are available, too.
Planning to Move
Bring your bathrobe and bedding, but leave the personal air conditioner at home. Get more details and your move-in schedule here.
Staying Over Break
Want to stay at Gustavus over summer or winter breaks when halls are closed? Investigate your options and apply for on-campus housing.
In Need of Accommodation
Gustavus is committed to making residential life accessible to all. If you live with a documented disability, contact Housing and Residence Life and we’ll find what works for you.
Open-Gender
At Gustavus, you can match with a roommate regardless of gender identity. We work with you to find the right residential experience for you. :
Special Interest Options
You can apply for a variety of special interest housing, ranging from Crossroads Community (international focus) to service to others in the ILS houses.
