Curriculum Development Grant

The Kendall Center welcomes proposals for its Curriculum Development Grant, which supports faculty members designing a new semester-long course or substantially re-designing an existing semester-long course. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 3, 2023. We anticipate making award decisions by April 17. In consultation with the Faculty Development Committee, some changes have been made to the grant criteria and review process (previously named Curriculum Development and Revitalization Grant). Please review the requirements and expectations carefully before crafting a proposal.

The Teaching Toolkit Program

The Kendall Center for Engaged Learning is excited to announce support for participation in a 4-week summer program offered by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. The Teaching Toolkit Program, which runs from July 17 - August 11 (4 weeks), focuses on fundamental topics for successful courses: course structure, efficient and effective grading, preparing for and facilitating inclusive classes, and time management techniques. Each week, participants will work through a training video and complete homework focused on these topics. In addition, the program facilitator (Lisa Hanasono, PhD) will offer live Q&As to answer questions throughout the program. The Kendall Center will cover the registration cost ($495) for successful applicants. Faculty Writing Retreats at Gustavus and ASI

April Writing Retreats, hosted by the Kendall Center, will be held on Saturday, April 22 at American Swedish Institute, Mpls ($15 toward lunch) and on Sunday, April 23 at Gustavus ,Konferensrum. Faculty can participate in a full day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. devoted to writing. We’ll provide lunch. Please visit the Kendall Center website for upcoming dates. Teachers Talking - Nobel Conference 2023

Join us on Tuesday, April 11 for a Teachers Talking. The topic is the Nobel Conference 2023: Insects: Little Body, Big Impact. Program is from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the St Peter Room.

Teachers Talking - WRITL and WRITD: Which is Right for Me?

Join us Friday, April 14 for Teachers Talking. Topic: WRITL and WRITD: Which is Right for Me? Writing is an essential component of the Challenge Curriculum. All students must complete at least four WRIT designated courses, at least one of which must be WRITL. We will help faculty members decide which WRIT designations fit their courses and give practical suggestions for proposing and teaching WRITL courses. Nissa Parmar (WAC Director) will address the differences between WRITL and WRITD and provide information about adding one of these designations to your course. Laura Burrack (Biology and Chal Director) will talk about teaching WRITL and WRITD in science courses and Challenge Seminars. The workshop is intended for anyone considering or currently teaching a WRITD or WRITL course as well as anyone interested in just learning more about writing in the Challenge Curriculum. Program is 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. President's Dining Room. Lunch provided.

Faculty Shop Talk - Kate Aguilar

Kate Aguilar (Assistant Professor in History) will present a Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, April 14. Her talk "It’s All About the U: The University of Miami Football Program and Black Athletic Activism in the 1980s" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Overview of Research Sponsored Programs Session

The Kendall Center and the office of Research Sponsored Programs has organized a joint one-hour session to provide an overview of what the Research Sponsored Programs does, how it can help faculty plan for applying for grants, and what constitutes strong applications. The session will be on Wednesday, April 26 from 10:30 to 11:30 in the St. Peter Room. Refreshments will be served. New Faculty Social

All new tenure track, visiting, and continuing faculty from the past three years are invited for a casual wine and cheese reception to celebrate the upcoming conclusion of the academic year on Thursday, April 27th at 4:30 pm. in the St Peter Room. Faculty mentors and the KCEL mentoring panel are also encouraged to attend.

Teachers Talking: Strategies for Group Discussion

Join us on Friday, April 28 for a Teachers Talking. Topic: Strategies for Group Discussion. Even while students desire more class engagement and value sharing their learning with their classmates, sometimes getting students to contribute to meaningful group discussions can feel like pulling teeth. Join Sarah Wolter (Communication Studies) and Kathy Lund Dean (E/M) for, well, a group discussion about strategies that enhance student discussions in any type of course. Program is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the St Peter Room, lunch provided.

Julie Bartley (Professor / Co-chair in Environment Geography and Earth ) will present a Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, April 28. Her talk "Inclusive Excellence in STEM at Gustavus - update and lessons learned so far" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the ST PETER ROOM. Nobel Conference FREE Book for Faculty 

In connection to this fall's Nobel Conference, the Kendall Center is pleased to offer faculty the free book, Buzz, Sting, Bite: Why We Need Insects. With ecologist Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson as our capable, entertaining guide into the insect world, we’ll learn that there is more variety among insects than we can even imagine and the more you learn about insects, the more fascinating they become. Buzz, Sting, Bite is an essential introduction to the little creatures that make the world go round.
