Sabbatical Leave Deadline

The deadline for sabbatical leave applications for the 2024-2025 academic year is Monday, March 13, 2023, 5 pm. Proposal forms and guidelines are available at gustavus.edu/kendallcenter. Nobel Conference FREE Book for Faculty 

In connection to this fall's Nobel Conference, the Kendall Center is pleased to offer faculty the free book, Buzz, Sting, Bite: Why We Need Insects. With ecologist Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson as our capable, entertaining guide into the insect world, we’ll learn that there is more variety among insects than we can even imagine and the more you learn about insects, the more fascinating they become. Buzz, Sting, Bite is an essential introduction to the little creatures that make the world go round. Email Cathy Blaukat (cblaukat@gustavus.edu) and a copy will be placed in your campus mailbox when the books become available.

New Faculty Orientation Session - Committee Roles

Join us on Thursday, March 2 for a New Faculty Orientation Session. Topic: Committee Roles. This discussion focuses on one’s role in service capacities, specifically as a committee member. It also will highlight good committee choices for junior faculty, what might be expected of you on these committees, and how you might constructively contribute to committees in general. Facilitator: Katrina Imison-Mázy, Associate Professor of Education and Faculty Senate Vice Chair. Grab your lunch coupon from David Stamps and then head over to the St Peter Room, 12:30 to 1:20 p.m.

Faculty Shop Talk - Lisa Heldke 

Lisa Heldke (Professor, Philosophy, Affiliated faculty in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, and Director in Nobel Conference) will present a Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, March 3. Her talk “Stuck on You: Thinking Parasitically" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Journal Article Writing Workshop 

The Kendall Center is hosting a one day journal article writing workshop on our campus with Dr. Lisa Munro on Friday, June 16 from 10:00 to 4:00 (lunch is included). The six-hour workshop provides academic journal article writers a day-long workshop structured around three to four of the major topics outlined in the workbook. Participants will refine their writing skills as well as learn and practice some of the important (yet unspoken) elements of journal article writing and publication. Due to the hands-on nature of the workshop, space is limited to 15 participants. Please fill out this form by Friday, March 31. Teachers Talking - Stronger Partnerships in Community-Engaged Learning.

Join us on Friday, March 10 for a Teachers Talking - Stronger Partnerships in Community-Engaged Learning. Maintaining productive partnerships in the community is perhaps the most vital aspect of community-engaged learning. Unfortunately, it is often the most overlooked. Join us for insights into starting a partnership off on the right foot, techniques for setting and managing partner expectations, and how to ensure the needs of the community are at the center of your CEL work. We'll hear from experienced community partners directly about what works (and what doesn't!) in their collaborations with Gustavus students and faculty. Program is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the St Peter Room. Refreshments provided

CANCELLED - The Chili Cook-Off and Dessert Pie-Off 

All faculty, please plan to attend the most tasty event of the year. What to do? Please make a dessert, pie, or cook up a pot of your favorite chili, enough to share. No time to cook? Come anyway, there is always plenty for all. The Cook-off will be held Friday, March 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Please RSVP to Cathy Blaukat (cblaukat@gustavus.edu) if you plan to make chili or a dessert.

Faculty Writing Retreats at Gustavus and ASI 

The Kendall Center is hosting monthly Writing Retreats at Gustavus and at American Swedish Institute (ASI). March Writing Retreats will be held on Saturday, March 11 at American Swedish Institute, Mpls ($15 toward lunch) at Gustavus (Konferensrum). Faculty can participate in a full day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. devoted to writing. Teachers Talking - Designing Small Group Assignments

Join us on Friday, March 23 for a Teachers Talking -Designing Small Group Assignments. Designing small group assignments for college courses can be challenging due to the diverse ways that students engage learning. However, the benefits of small group work and collaborative student learning are many. In this Teachers Talking Session, Amanda Nienow and Patricia English-Schneider will discuss ways to design small group assignments that are intentional, equitable and that integrate course content with a focus on the small group process. The facilitators will also provide some tips for creating small group assignments and describe examples of group assignments that they incorporated into their classes in chemistry and communication studies. The workshop is intended for faculty who want to gain an understanding of the benefits of small group work and for those interested in developing and implementing small group assignments in their classes. Program is from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the St Peter Room. Refreshments provided
