J-Term Reading Group - Odyssey

The Kendall Center for Engaged Learning invites faculty and staff to participate this January in a discussion group that will be reading Emily Wilson’s new translation of Homer’s Odyssey. This is the first translation into English by a woman of the epic poem about Odysseus, his travels home after the Trojan war, and eventual reunion with his wife and son. The translation has been heralded as “a revelation” that captures the “beauty of the poetry, the physicality of Homer’s world, and the moral ambiguity of those who inhabit it (Susan Chira, NYT Book Review).” We will meet on the first Thursday (January 10) and then on Tuesdays (January 15, 22, 29) from 3-4:30 in the Phi Beta Kappa Room. It will be led by Yurie Hong and Matthew Panciera of the classics department. The Kendall Center will provide a copy of the book as well as refreshments. J-Term Reading Group - Waking Up White

The Kendall Center for Engaged Learning invites faculty and staff to participate this January in a discussion group to read Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race, by Debby Irving, which describes Irving’s personal journey to understand racism and white privilege. As she explains “As I unpack my own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of color, I reveal how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated my ill-conceived ideas about race.” This group will meet on Mondays in January (7th, 14th, 21st & 28th) from 3-4:30 in the Konfersrum. It will be led by Margaret Bloch Qazi Faculty Associate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Kendall Center will provide a copy of the book to each participant as well as refreshments. The group is limited to 15 participants. Please contact Cathy Blaukat (cblaukat@gustavus.edu) to sign up for this reading group by Friday, December 21.

His talk " Setting students up for research success" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Teachers Talking

Please join us on Thursday, December 13 for Teachers Talking. Topic: Team-teaching at Gustavus. Have you ever wanted to team-teach a course with a colleague but weren’t sure how to go about it? Come hear about the benefits of team-taught classes, logistical factors to consider, and tips on how to ensure that the collaboration is mutually productive for faculty and students. Laura Burrack (Bio), Yurie Hong (Classics), and Margaret Bloch-Qazi (Bio) will share their experiences and perspectives on a range of collaborative opportunities including team-taught and linked courses. Program is at 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Free lunch at Three Crowns buffet, then meet in the St Peter Room.

Ursula Lindqvuist (Associate Professor in Scandinavian Studies) will present at Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, December 14. Her talk "Nordic-Branded Feminism and Third Word Tropes in Global Cinema" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Join the Kendall Center for Gradingfest in the Board Room from 9 am to 5 pm on Tuesday, December 18 and Wednesday, December 19. Fuel up on coffee and treats before heading back to your office to work or stay and enjoy the camaraderie of working alongside others.
