Who should I ask to see?
A provider
A provider can make assessments, order tests, determine diagnoses, and prescribe medications and will see students for:
- physical exams (study abroad, pre-op, annual exams)
- sore throats (if not improving after 48 hours)
- urinary tract infections
- depression/anxiety
- STI testing
- pap smears
- begin birth control/talk about options
- ear aches
- pink eye (if painful and itchy for 24 hours)
- mononucleosis
- bronchitis
- wart treatment
- mole removal
- influenza (rapid onset, aches, chills, high fever)
- numerous other symptoms/conditions - providers can make referrals to specialists if necessary
A nurse
Can provide over the counter medications and will see students for:
- immunizations (HPV, Td, Hep A & B, Mantoux)
- general health questions
- questioning whether to see a provider
- Plan B
- pregnancy test
- suture removal
- sprains
- abrasions
- burns
- rash
- cold/congestion
- temperature taken
- stomach flu
These are broad categories that are subject to change by Health Service. Nurse appointments may be referred to provider as necessary. If you are unsure, just call or stop by and ask!
