About Us
The Department of Campus Safety is on-duty 24 hours a day. Our mission is to provide the safest environment possible in which education may be pursued.
Uniformed officers are responsible for residence hall, academic building and grounds security, enforcement of parking and traffic issues, response to health and safety concerns, and supervision of student assistants in both residence halls and academic facilities. Officers are in constant radio communication with the St. Peter Police Department.
Because of the serenity and size of Gustavus Adolphus College, some tend to get the impression that the college community is immune to crime. Unfortunately, crime does not stop at the borders of our campus. People find this out all too well when they become victims of crime.
The responsibility of crime prevention does not rest solely with the campus security department. We need everybody's assistance in making Gustavus Adolphus College a safe and secure place where the community can go about its endeavors in a safe manner. YOU are the most important piece of the crime prevention plan. The success of it depends mainly on you.
The potential for crime does exist at Gustavus Adolphus College, but by practicing good crime prevention habits, the possibility of your becoming a victim substantially reduces.
Behavioral Assessment Team
Gustavus has a Behavioral Assessment Team committed to improving community safety by managing situations that pose, or may reasonably pose, a threat to the health, safety, and well-being of the campus community. Through a proactive, collaborative, organized, and objective approach, the Behavioral Assessment Team is able to identify, assess, intervene, and manage disruptive or threatening situations or individuals. The threat assessment process encourages early intervention to manage individuals whose behaviors potentially impede their own or others’ ability to function successfully or safely. Employees and students should immediately report any situation that could possibly result in harm to anyone at the College by contacting Campus Safety or calling 911.
Campus Safety Student Employment Positions
The Department of Campus Safety has a large student employment program (normally around 100 student employees). There are no positions that require special skills that cannot be learned on the job. We require dependability and willingness to learn. All areas build on customer service skills, communication, and critical thinking skills to help support the needs of the department in providing a safe and secure atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to enjoy our campus community. All student employees are required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Position descriptions and openings are found on Handshake. Most student employees are scheduled evenings and rotating weekends. The dispatch/office assistant positions may work 1 to 4 hours depending on class schedules and office hours available during the day. Most students will work one to two times per week with rotating weekends. Positions include Safe Rides driver (require a valid driver's license), Dispatch Assistant, Dispatcher, Student Supervisor, and Lost and Found Coordinator. Contact safety@gustavus.edu if you are interested in any of the Campus Safety student employment positions.

Crime Log
The Gustavus Adolphus College Public Crime Log is a report of all crimes reported to the Department of Campus Safety. A case number is assigned for all reports written by a Campus Safety officer, and may not be in sequential order. Crimes reported to outside agencies that are then reported to Campus Safety will reflect different case numbers, and it may not be possible to provide all information regarding the five areas typically covered in the Crime Log, i.e. (Nature/Classification, Date Reported, Date Occurred, Time, General Location, and Disposition). Because an official report was not filed, the disposition will be ‘Closed’. The crime log incidents will not match the crime statistics listed in the College’s Annual Security Report, as the Public Crime Log reflects all incidents reported to Campus Safety and the annual crime statistics are required by law to be compiled using the Federal Uniformed Crime Reporting crime definitions.
