Summer EmploymentStudent and Supervisor Resources

The following pertains to summer student researchers paid from external grants, internal grants, endowed or departmental funds.

Required Supervisor Training:
All supervisors must complete a required online training with a quiz by Friday, May 24th, 2024 or their student will not be set up to work.

Upon completion of the supervisor training, please complete the online quiz: Summer Research Faculty Quiz

2024 Student Hourly Rate:
The hourly student research rate has been adjusted to $15.44 for 2024. This base rate should be used for all Summer Research Employment and Supervisor Agreements. 

When calculating your summer research budget, remember that fringe benefits will be charged to the account from which a student is paid. The fringe benefit rate is approximately 8.28%.

*Summer wages are taxable income.

Housing:
 *Housing Application forms are due APRIL 21st, 2024. If you have questions regarding summer housing, please email reslife@gustavus.edu
1. Please remind students that they are responsible for paying their summer housing bills. 
2. Students will not receive an additional stipend for housing.

Employment:
Forms are due by Friday, April 19th, 2024 to Sarah Peterson, RSP (speterson@gustavus.edu)
1. Required: 2024 Student Research Summer Agreement
2. If a student has not been previously employed by Gustavus the following forms are required and can be found below:

a. Student Direct Deposit Authorization 
b. I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification)
d. Federal Federal 2024 Federal W-4 (Employee's Withholding Certificate)
e. MN W-4 (Minnesota Employee Withholding Allowance/Exemption Certificate); Additional Resource: W-4 Comparison Tools 

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training:
Students working on summer research projects that are externally funded by a government source (federal, state, or local) are required to complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training. 
• Students must complete the online CITI training before attending the In-Person RCR training.
• A virtual RCR training will be held on June 5th, 2024. 
• An In-Person RCR Training makeup session will be offered on TBD.

Required Lab Safety Training:
The online laboratory safety course should be completed by all laboratory users annually before working in labs. Below are the instructions to sign in and complete the course. Please let your supervisor know if there are any difficulties with the links. We are now using the CITI Program Lab Safety courses, which are specifically selected based on the learner group you're in (students, faculty/staff). 

A) Please click on this link: CITI Program 
B) Log in, or register. When registering, first select Gustavus Adolphus College as your institution, then follow the remaining prompts. Please note that Gustavus no longer uses SSO with this website. So new users to this system will need to register an account and select Gustavus Adolphus College as their institution during the registration process to see the relevant training courses.
C) Click on the "My Courses" tab in the upper right-hand side of the page.
D) Find Gustavus Adolphus College on the new page that opened up, and click on "View Courses".
E) Scroll to the bottom of the page to a box labeled "Learner Tools for Gustavus Adolphus College" and click "Add a Course"
F) For the Lab Safety courses, Answer Question 8 regarding your role as either a student or faculty/staff.
G) For undergraduate students, the course you will be taking is: Lab Chemical Safety–Students. For faculty/staff, the course you will be taking is: Lab Chemical Safety–Faculty/Staff.
H) Your course should populate the list of courses you are required to take.
