Phillips Scholars

THE PHILLIPS SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders.

Students from 16 eligible private colleges and universities, including Gustavus Adolphus College, are invited to apply by submitting a proposed service project to benefit Minnesota communities. Each campus selects a finalist to compete for one of six $16,500 Phillips Scholars awards:

  • $6,000 Senior-year scholarship;
  • $4,000 Summer 2013 stipend;
  • $ 500 Project Resource Funding.

CHALLENGE FOR VISIONARIES

The Phillips Scholars Program builds future leaders. Scholars do much more than volunteer. They identify community needs and explore ways to create social change. Applicants are encouraged to focus on areas of interest to the Phillips Foundation, such as human services, health, education, the disabled, and eliminating discrimination.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA – Student should:

  • be enrolled at an eligible private college as a SOPHOMORE in 2013-2014 academic year;
  • have an excellent academic record (GPA of 2.75+);
  • have demonstrated current financial need;
  • aspire to serve disadvantaged people;
  • have a history of participating in campus activities and an interest in community service and volunteering; and
  • be committed to designing and implementing a Minnesota-focused service project in the 2015 Summer

APPLICATION MATERIALS & PROCEDURE

Each application shall submit a complete application to the Diversity Center at Gustavus Adolphus College by January 10, 2014. The campus committee will review the applications and forward the finalist's information and application to the Minnesota Private College Fund (MPCF) by February 7, 2014. The MPCF selection committee will then review all finalists' applications and select SIX scholarship recipients and two alternates in mid-March, 2014.

The complete application includes:

  • Application Form
  • Service project proposal including program timeline (7 pages or less), 12 pt. font, double spaced recommended
  • Description of past service and leadership experience (2 pages or less), Resume format recommended
  • Current transcript
  • Evidence of Financial Need Form
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation & Accompanying Surveys

  • December 5, 2013 - Information Session with Jewelly Lee & Nicole Ektnitphong
  • January 10, 2014 - Completed Applications submitted to Diversity Center
  • Mid January 2014 - Gustavus Finalist Named
  • February 7, 2014 - Gustavus Finalist Proposal Submitted to Phillips Scholarship Committee
  • Mid-March 2014 - Phillips Scholars Announced
  • April 2014 - Phillips Scholarship Luncheon
