Julia

 Name: Julia Baldus

Graduation Year: 2024

Major: Biology

Story: Hello! My name is Julia Baldus and I am from Grand Meadow, Minnesota. My first exposure to optometry occurred when I was a young girl, as I have been wearing glasses since I was three years old. As I grew older, I began to truly appreciate the help I was receiving, and I became increasingly aware of the impacts that this care had on my well-being. As I learned more about what this profession entails and how it aligned with my interests of health, science, problem-solving, and helping others, I became more and more certain that I would love to become an optometrist!

I came to Gustavus as a freshman knowing I wanted to major in Biology in preparation for a career in optometry after my undergraduate studies. I was fortunate to have this career path in mind already, and with help from professors, advisors, and the Office of Health Professions, I was able to make a plan to pursue this goal. At Gustavus I prepared for optometry school by completing the necessary prerequisites, but also by gaining shadowing experience through the career exploration J-term course. This shadowing opportunity allowed me to gain realistic insight into the profession of optometry, and helped me confirm my decision to pursue this career.

Providing eye care to others is a fulfilling career path that I am more than excited to begin. I have been fortunate to receive exceptional eye care my entire life, and I am committed to pursuing this goal so that I can someday provide that same care to others!

Top Five Activities/Experiences: (in no particular order)

1. Studying abroad for a semester in Aberdeen, Scotland

2. Shadowing at the Carlson-Tillisch Eye Clinic through the career exploration J-term

3. Gustavus Newman Center (Catholic Gusties)

4. Lucia Choir

5. Gustavus Handbells

Advice:

1. Don’t be afraid to try new things! I grew SO much during my time at Gustavus, and have heard many Gusties share this experience as well. Trying new things and getting involved in activities that interest you can be beneficial in so many ways. I would encourage you to go for it, even if it might be scary!

2. Ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s meeting with a professor in office hours, making an appointment with the writing center, or whatever it may be. Try to take advantage of the many resources available to you. The Gustavus community wants to see you succeed!

3. Be intentional with your time. Try to find a balance between your academics and the other aspects of your life so that you don’t burn yourself out. These four years fly by, so just try to make the most of every moment.

Future Plans: Attending Michigan College of Optometry, starting Fall 2024.
