Name: Muresuk Mena

Graduating Class: 2013

Major: Biology

Your Story:

My name is Muresuk Mena. I grew up in Inver Grove Heights, MN. I chose Gustavus because of the people I met on my visit and its many accolades.

My interest in pre-medicine started when I was in 8th grade. Growing up I always was the type of person who felt the need to help people. After taking health class and biology I thought that medicine might be the thing for me. My family comes from a different country and healthcare is one thing that is always needed. Growing up in a household with parents that experienced the need for healthcare ignited my passion and desire to not only help people, but pursue a career in healthcare because of the many things it can do and offer.

My most influential experience at Gustavus confirming pre-medicine path was meeting others that wanted to get into healthcare for much of the same reasons as I did.

Top Five Activities/Experiences:

1. Football

2. PASO- Pan-Afrikan Student Organization

3. LSAMP- Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Partnership

4. Volunteering at the South Elementary Early Learning Center

5. Being an Intern in the President’s office

Advice:

Don’t be scared to ask for help whether that be in class or one on one. Sometimes to become successful you need to step out of your comfort zone and do something you love. If healthcare is what you want to do then do everything you can to pursue that dream.

Also I would not recommend trying to cram everything into one semester or year. Do what works for you and what would allow you to do your best possible. Summer classes can be a way to help alleviate overscheduling your semesters.

Try volunteering at hospitals and in other healthcare settings. This may give you a better understanding of what you want to do and also if there is a particular health area you want to learn more about.

Future Plans:

Possibly Teach For America or working as an EMT. I will know more once I graduate. I will continue to take classes, gain experience and apply to Physician Assistant Programs in the future.
