Your Story:

Hi! My name is Megan Crow and I'm from Vadnais Heights, MN.

I went into Gustavus knowing I was interested in the sciences but uncertain about what I wanted to do with that. I found I really enjoyed the human biology unit as a first year and started to pursue that interest further, including the Pre-health January Interim Career Exploration at the Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato and summer volunteering at HCMC. I also did research for two summers at Gustavus.

When not in Nobel Hall, I spent my time at Gustavus with Building Bridges. I also studied abroad in Chile where I lived with a host family. I found that an interest in medicine also integrated what I had learned about social justice. Around this time I decided I wanted to take a gap year before applying to school.

After Gustavus I moved out to Boston through the Episcopal Service Corps for a position as a community organizer at Health Care For All, a non-profit. I absolutely loved my time out there and enjoyed living in and exploring a new city. Then, after that ended I moved back to Minnesota to work as a medical scribe with the hospitalists at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Top Five Activities/Experiences: (in no particular order)

  1. Being involved in Building Bridges
  2. Semester abroad in Chile
  3. Summer research at Gustavus
  4. Working as a community organizer at Health Care For All after graduation
  5. Pre-health January Interim Career Exploration at the Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato

Advice:

  1. Be gentle with yourself! You are working very hard, and it's a long process from your first year of undergrad to starting med school. It's important to find ways to take care of yourself and above all have fun at Gustavus!
  2. Don't be afraid to take a gap year. There are multiple paths to medical school.
  3. Do things because you are genuinely interested in them, not just because they look good on a resume.

Future Plans:  Attending the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Medical School, start Fall 2016.
