Your Story:

My Name is Griffin Reed, and I'm a senior from Mantorville, MN (a really small town).

My interest in medicine started the summer before coming to Gustavus when I worked as an eye procurement technician (removing eyes from donors to be used for a transplantation and research).  After that, I did everything I could to learn more about and experience medicine at Gustavus.

I applied to go into a medical school straight out of Gustavus, but most of the other students have been accepted to med-school generally take a year or more off. I don't think there is a right or wrong choice with this, just do what you think is right for yourself!

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions that you have for a weathered Gustie pre-med!

Top Five Activities/Experiences: (in no particular order)

1. Working at Camp Knutson (a camp for kids with special needs and serious illnesses)

2. Elders

3. Pre-health Interim Career Exploration at the Mankato Clinic

4. Research at Mayo Clinic and Karolinska Institute (also the IMPACT program at Mayo)

5. Minnesota Lions Eye Bank Procurement Technician

Advice:

  1. Find a role model – There are a lot of things to do on campus, so find someone you want to be like and do what they do. It helped me not to miss out on important activities.
  2. Take time to relax and enjoy the college experience. It’s OK to give yourself a night (or two!) off every once in a while :)
  3. Only participate in activities you are passionate about. If you don’t really care about something it won’t be valuable on your resume (because you won’t be able to talk about it passionately).

Future Plans: Attending the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, start Fall 2016 Class of 2020
