Cate DeRemee '21Sub-Title

Name: Cate DeRemee

Graduation Year: 2021

Major: Exercise Physioloy

Your Story: Born and raised in Ely, MN which is 2 hours north of Duluth, MN. I started at Gustavus in the Fall of 2017. During my time here I have been a part of the Gustavus Choir, Nordic Ski Club and worked in the campus bakery and the STEAMERY. When I first started school, I thought I would be pre physical therapy and a biology major. That plan changed within a few years when I found out about Mayo’s Surgical First Assistant Program, from Professor Kikki Harbitz. I changed my major to Exercise Physiology and fell in love with the science behind the human body. The Surgical First Assistant Program is a highly competitive program where 300 some people apply but only 20 students are admitted. This was a shot in the dark application if I’m being honest. Thankfully, I had the Career Development Center and Heidi Selzlerbahr to help me prep for the interview process.

Top Five Activities/Experiences:

1: Canoe Trips with my Family in the Boundary Waters

2: Being outside with friends

3: Working out

4: Singing dancing and playing piano

5: Favorite experience at Gustavus was the International Tour to Europe with the Gustavus Choir in 2019

Advice:

1: It’s okay to change your plan and not totally sure what to do

2: Talk to your professors and don't be afraid to ask for help or guidance!

3: Have fun learning and be passionate about what you are learning! Find something that you geek out at!

Future Plans: Attending: U of MN-Rochester: Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences- Surgical First Assistant Program, starting January 2022
