Special Support for GustiesStudy away discounts and awards just for us!

Intricate tiles in Middle EastSome Gustavus partners set aside targeted or special funding support for Gustavus participants. This page describes some of the ongoing forms of support available each year.

*Indicates that the award is open to international students as well as U.S. students

1. CIEE*
CIEE has been setting aside grants for Gustavus students considering Open Campus programs, whether you're looking at one Open Campus site for all three Blocks during the semester, or the Open Campus Global Scholars program, which allows you to mix-and-match any two or three program sites. The number and amounts of awards vary each semester. Ask an advisor for the amounts for the upcoming semester.

2. SIT(*)

  • *Gustavus/SIT Study Away Research Awards are for students participating in fall, spring, and/or summer SIT programs. The funding amount offered to any participant varies, but awards are usually between $1000 and $6000, depending on individual need and the total number of applicants by April 15. Both need and merit are considered. Not all applicants will receive awards. Awards are decided by CICE staff members together with the Gustavus Financial Aid office, and all decisions are final.
  • SIT also matches all Gustavus-based Pell Grants for semester programs. For example, if your financial aid award at Gustavus includes a $2000 Pell Grant for the fall semester in which you will study with SIT, you will still get to apply that grant (and all of your aid except student employment) to that semester and, in addition to that, SIT will also match that $2000 award by reducing your program fee by an additional $2000. (US Pell-eligible students only)
  • The maximum total for all SIT awards is $6000 per semester enrollment and $3000 per summer enrollment.

3. USAC*
Because Gustavus is affiliated with USAC, Gustavus has a small number of modest grants to award to students participating in USAC programs. The grant amount depends on the number of Gusties who participated in the previous academic year's programs. Recently, the amount has been around $250 per participant. This discount is not reflected in the budgets shown on either the CICE or USAC websites, as this award can be competitive and is not always awarded to every participant.

4. CISabroad*
Because Gustavus is affiliated with CISabroad, all Gusties in CISabroad programs receive an automatic discount on their fees for CIS programs. The discount amount is $250 per semester study program, and $100 per short-term or any length of internship program. This discount is not reflected in the budgets shown on either the CICE or CISabroad websites.

5. American Junior Year at Heidelberg University (Germany)*
Gustavus students in the AJY at Heidelberg program are not required to pay the application fee ($25.00) when submitting their application. When confirming their participation in the AJY program, Gustavus students do not have to pay the non-refundable confirmation fee ($250.00).

6. Absolute Internship J-Term Sweden*
If more than five Gustavus students participate in any year's Absolute Internship J-Term program in Stockholm, Sweden, all participants receive a substantial discount on the program cost. The exact amount discounted varies from year to year. (If you like this program, tell your friends and classmates about it, too!) The possible discount is not reflected in the price shown in the CICE website, which is the maximum program price when less than six students participate.

7. School for Field Studies
The School for Field Studies (SFS) matches all Gustavus-based Pell Grants for semester SFS programs. For example, if your financial aid award at Gustavus includes a $2000 Pell Grant for the fall semester in which you will study with SFS, you will still get to apply that grant (and all of your aid except student employment) to that semester and, in addition to that, SFS will also match that $2000 award by reducing your program fee by an additional $2000. (US Pell-eligible students only)

8. CAPA*
Because Gustavus is affiliated with CAPA, all Gusties in CAPA summer Global Seminars programs receive an automatic $300 discount on their programs fees. This discount is not reflected in the budgets shown on either the CICE or CAPA websites.

9. Loyola University*
Because Gustavus is affiliated with Loyola, all Gusties in the Loyola program in Italy receive a 35% discount on their Loyola program fees (study away tuition and room/board). This discount is reflected in the budget shown in the CICE website.

10. HECUA*
Because Gustavus is affiliated with HECUA, all Gusties enrolling in HECUA programs benefit from a discount on their HECUA program fees. This discount is reflected in the budget shown in the CICE website.
