Quinn Bents '20
Name: Quinn Bents
Graduation Year: 2020
Major: Biology
Your Story: I’m from Worthington MN, and I’m currently a senior Biology major at
Gustavus Adolphus College! I’ve worked at a vet clinic in my hometown since I was
fourteen. I started there as a kennel attendant, and I slowly worked my way up until
I was working as a veterinary assistant. I’ve gotten hands-on experience in both
small and large animal, and my time at this clinic has really solidified my ambitions
to pursue veterinary medicine. I attended Gustavus for all four years of my
undergraduate education. I opted to not take a gap year, and I will be starting at the
University of Minnesota for vet school in the fall.
Top Five Activities/Experiences: (in no particular order)
1. Women’s Rugby
2. Pre-Vet Club
3. Tri-Beta
4. TA for Biology courses
5. Working at the Courtyard Cafe
Advice:
1. Get a lot of diverse experience and write down what you’re doing! It’ll be
really helpful when you’re filling out your application, and they like to see
that you’ve had a lot of different experiences.
2. Reach out to others for help. This could be a vet student, your advisor, a local
vet, or anyone in the career development office! They all have a lot of unique
advice to offer you and will be a major help throughout the entire process.
3. It is really important to do well in school. Make sure you’re going to class,
paying attention to lecture, and putting in the work to complete your
homework and studying. The prerequisite courses aren’t easy! Also, don’t be
scared to go to office hours or especially the tutors.
Future Plans: I will be attending the University of Minnesota
College of Veterinary Medicine, starting Fall 2020. I will spend the next four years studying Veterinary Medicine. I hope to
pursue mixed practice, meaning both small and large animal. I would like to stay in
rural Minnesota to practice vet medicine.
