Statement Of Purpose/ Mission
The purpose of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Club is: 1) to strengthen the community amongst BMB majors and promote the BMB program to prospective and new students at Gustavus, 2) to organize science outreach activities, and 3) to encourage research opportunities at Gustavus, partnering institutions, and through ASBMB. The BMB club will be recognized as an ASBMB student chapter. All students interested in the biochemistry program are welcome, but full membership is only available to those who meet the ASBMB criteria. Any others in the club will be recognized as local members.

ARTICLE I: NAME

The name of this organization shall be the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Club.

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE

The purpose of the ASBMB club shall be to function as an honor and professional society for students majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology. Activities shall generate interest, discovery, and collaboration in the biological, chemical, andbiochemical sciences. 

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP

Section 1: Membership in this organization is catered specifically for those majoring in the BMB program. However, anyone interested in science is welcome and encouraged to join. 

Section 2: Members are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the school year, however, those who would like to participate and become a member of the honors society must meet criteria and be a member in good standing through the full academic year. 

ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS

Section 1: The following officer positions shall exist in the BMB club: President(s), Vice President (optional), Secretary, Risk Manager, Member at Large (optional), Event Coordinator (optional), and Treasurer. All officers must be full-time students of Gustavus Adolphus College, in good standing, and with a declared major in BMB. The only position that must meet additional requirements is the President(s). They must have been a member of the organization for at least a year. If no qualified parties are interested, this requirement may be waived with the majority agreement of the current executive board.

Section 2: Officers will hold their respective positions for one academic year. Prospective officers must complete an application (prepared by the current executive board) for all open positions at the end of the academic year. The current executive board members will then select students for positions by way of majority vote. If an executive board member is going to run for a position the following year, they may not cast a vote for that role. If an officer graduates or withdraws from a position in the middle of an academic year, the position’s responsibilities will be split between the remaining officers until a new student is elected.

Section 3: The Member at Large position is reserved for the academic assistant(s) of the BMB department. The assistants may share the responsibilities of the role and act as one spot on the executive board. If no assistant is interested in the position, it will be left empty. 

Section 4: The duties of each office are described as follows: 

  1. President(s): 1. To organize and preside over meetings. 2. To facilitate the agenda for Executive Board meetings. 3. To assist and guide all officers with their duties as needed. 
  2. Vice President: To assist the president(s) with assigned tasks, and to act as president if they are unable to be present.
  3. Secretary: 1. To collect E-board and general meeting notes. 2. To reserve spaces and submit events to the general calendar. 3. Manage folders in drive and update the executive board. 
  4. Treasurer: To manage budget, collect honors society dues, and do mid-year allocations. 
  5. Event Coordinator: 1. To create and plan events for the club. 2. Community outreach and tabling for the club. 
  6. Risk Manager: 1. To manage conflicts among board members, organization members, and any mix of the two parties. 2. To support the president(s) in sending and managing any contracts. 3. To support any tasks that have been delegated by other board members.
  7. Member at Large: 1. To assist in creating and running study events for BMB specific classes. 2. To assist in coordination with other STEM department assistants. 

ARTICLE V: FACULTY ADVISOR

Section 1: A faculty member must always hold a seat on the executive board as an advisor. The faculty member will serve a term of four years upon election, and can be re-elected. 

Section 2: Current executive board members will meet and discuss possible faculty members of interest and hold a vote. The faculty member with the most votes will serve as faculty advisor. If a tie occurs, a run-off vote will be held. 

Section 3: The faculty member(s) in consideration must be a member of the ASBMB. This stipulation may be waived if no interested faculty are members of the society.

ARTICLE VI: MEETINGS

Section 1: At minimum, meetings will occur once per month during the academic year. The secretary is responsible for informing members of the club of meetings and event dates. The president(s) will set an agenda for meetings with input from executive board members and the faculty advisor. 

Section 2: Any additional meetings on top of the mandatory monthly meeting must be planned and approved by all executive board members at least a week in advance of the prospective date.

ARTICLE VII: EXECUTIVE BOARD 

Section 1: The executive board shall consist of all officer positions previously outlined, as well as any member in good standing who has been permitted by a majority vote of officers. However, the executive board shall never consist of more than ten members.

Section 2: The executive board will also meet a minimum of once per semester (once per month if possible) to discuss events and divide club responsibilities. At the first meeting of each semester, tentative meeting dates will be set and organizational goals will be recorded. 

ARTICLE VIII: FINANCES

Section 1: Upon dissolution of the BMB club, any financial assets will be credited to the Gustavus Student Senate.

ARTICLE IX: BY-LAWS

Section 1: By-laws may be created by members and shall be reviewed each fall at the date of the first executive board meeting of the academic year. Any member may propose a by-law, as long as they are in good standing with the club. They will be prepared for voting by executive board members by the date of the next club meeting where voting will take place.

Section 2: All members in good standing with the club are eligible to vote on by-laws, however, they must be present at the corresponding meeting. In order for the prospective by-law to pass, a majority vote is needed. 

ARTICLE X: AMENDMENTS 

Section 1: All members of the BMB Club may propose amendments. All proposed amendments will be reviewed and discussed by the executive board at the next board meeting. The amendment will then be taken to the following club meeting for a vote. 

Section 2: All members in good standing are eligible to vote but must be present to do so. A majority is required for the amendment to pass.
