I have multiple roles at Gustavus. As an environmental advocate, I work towards making Gustavus reflect the environmental values that we teach in the Environmental Studies Program. I work toward positive change at Gustavus and fundamental change of the systems that have led to the serious environmental issues faced today. As a scientist, I am an environmental chemist, environmental engineer, systems scientist, geochemist, environmental scientist - it doesn't really matter what you call me - I like to study the environment! As a teacher, I try to connect learning about environmental processes with a social and ethical responsibility to the earth and its inhabitants. Here are some more details about what I do at Gustavus:
- Co-Director Johnson Center for Environmental Innovation. At the Johnson Center we work towards making Gustavus environmentally sustainable. We also reach out to our local and regional community to create partnerships. Want to join our efforts? Contact me! We hire lots of students to make a difference at Gustavus and to practice becoming the environmental leaders of the future.
- Gustavus Environmental Chemistry Lab. My research lab measures mercury, trace metals, cations, and organic carbon. We collect and analyze environmental samples and our ongoing work is in the St Louis River and the Marcell Experimental Forest. Students interested in working in the lab or getting involved in environmental research should contact me! Our lab also does trace level mercury and methylmercury analysis at reasonable rates. The lab is equipped with an Agilent 7700 quadrupole ICP-MS, MERX-M and MERX-T mercury analyzers, and a Shimadzu carbon analyzer.
