Fall Faculty Writing Retreats at GAC and ASI

The Kendall Center is hosting monthly Writing Retreats this fall semester both at Gustavus and at ASI. October Writing Retreats will be held on Saturday, October 25 at ASI and and Sunday, October 26 at Gustavus (Board Room). Faculty can sign up for a full day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. devoted to writing. We’ll provide breakfast and lunch. Please visit the Kendall Center website for dates and info. Please reserve a space with Cathy Blaukat (cblauka@gustavus.edu) for one or all of the writing retreats.

Faculty Writing Days in October

New this fall, every week, the Kendall Center will host a writing day. Come when you can, leave when you must. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Coffee and tea provided. Dates in October - Friday, October 3, Chaplain’s Resource Room, Old Main 103, Monday, October 6, Phi Beta Kappa, Vickner Hall (8 a.m.-3:45 p.m.), Wednesday, October 15, Beck 371, Friday, October 24, Chaplain’s Resource Room, Old Main 103, Tuesday, October 28, Phi Beta Kappa, Vickner Hall. Teachers Talking

Join us on Thursday, October 9, 2014 for Teachers Talking. The topic will be: "I Thought They Learned That in High School!: Strategies for Teaching First Year Students" facilitated by Kate Knutson. Program at 11:30 am and again at 12:30 pm. Free lunch at Three Crowns buffet, meet in the St Peter Room.

Remaking College: Innovation and the Liberal Arts - Reading Group

Interested faculty are cordially invited to join Alisa Rosenthal (Kendall Center), Greg Kaster (History), John Hallberg (Trustee), and President Becky Bergman for a convivial and engaging discussion of Remaking College: Innovation and the Liberal Arts (Johns Hopkins, 2014) on October 10, 2014, 3:30-5:00 PM in the Board Room of the Campus Center. Remaking College is edited by Rebecca Chopp (former President of Swarthmore College and incoming Chancellor of the University of Denver), Susan Frost (higher education consultant), and Daniel H. Weiss (President of Haverford College and past President of Lafayette College). The book is brief, and participants are encouraged to focus on chapters 1-5, 7, 10, 11-14, 16-17.

Teachers Talking Technology

Join faculty on Tuesday, October 14 for Teachers Talking Technology. Topic will be "Microsoft Workshop: Word, Excel, PowerPoint". Program at 11:30 am and again at 12:30 pm. Free lunch at Three Crowns buffet, meet in the Heritage Room.

New Faculty Orientation Session

Join us on Thursday, October 16 for New Faculty Orientation Session. Topic is Grading rubrics and policies. A session on grading student assignments. A variety of assignment types are discussed. Presenter: Kate Knutson. Free lunch at the Three Crowns Buffet, then meet in the President's Dining Room, 12:30 to 1:20 p.m

Faculty Shop Talk

Joaquin Villanueva (Visiting Assistant Professor in Geography) will present a Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, October 17. His talk entitled, "Capturing Urban Change: Methodologies for the Study of the Restless Urban Landscape" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Paschal Kyoore (Professor in French and LALACS) will present a Faculty Shop Talk on Friday, October 31. His talk entitled, "Dagara Verbal Art: A West African Tradition" will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in the Interpretive Center. Cultivating Resilient Students: A faculty conversation and (FREE) lunch with Dr. Henry Emmons

The Gustavus Wellbeing Center is proud to welcome Dr. Henry Emmons to campus again on October 10th! Dr. Emmons is an integrative psychiatrist, bestselling author of The Chemistry of Joy and The Chemistry of Calm, national thought leader in resilience, and expert on college student health.
