International Education at Gustavus

United International College (UIC) in Zhuhai, China is now in its third year of operation. The curriculum, similar to that offered by an American liberal arts college, is based on the semester system with a September-June calendar. The medium of instruction is in English. UIC shares a sprawling campus with Beijing Normal University in a beautifully landscaped hilly area forty minutes north of the former Portuguese colony of Macao. Hong Kong is an hour's ferry ride from Zhuhai. The Hong Kong Baptist University joined with the Beijing Normal University to establish the new university through a major financial contribution and by providing teachers and accreditation during the start-up period now underway. It is an experimental college, the first of its kind in China since the pre-Mao days. Dr. Edmund Kwok, Executive Vice-President of the United International College hopes to graduate broadly educated potential leaders whose vision goes beyond the narrow career fields espoused by most educational institutions on the mainland.

Dr. Kwok is eager for Gustavus, as a member of the Minnesota Private Colleges Council, to participate in this learning initiative through a two-way exchange program for students or teaching stints for faculty. Dr. Kwok is interested in attracting retired or presently teaching faculty who may wish to spend a year or more at UIC. Visiting professors are invited to teach special liberal arts courses of their own design, if they prefer. UIC provides a compensation package including housing. The cost of living in Zhuihai is quite low. There are nearby private international school options for accompanying K-12 family members. Family members interested in participating in ESL teaching or in learning Mandarin Chinese are most welcome. UIC is prepared to assist visiting faculty with research projects in China and will accommodate special short-term study groups in a particular discipline with respect to both classroom and field instruction. Translators are readily available. Interested faculty should contact Pat Quade.
