General Education at GustavusReduction in the Number of Courses for Some Majors
Smaller Major Course Loads
- Fewer courses, more choice: Most majors are now capped at 48 credits – with some exceptions for prerequisites and repeatable courses (think labs and ensembles). Externally accredited majors (Education, Nursing, Professional Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Public Accounting) are exempt – they have unique requirements that are not set by Gustavus.
- Changes to majors and minors: Stay up-to-date with the latest information on program changes, ensuring you make informed decisions about your academic path.
Why the change?
- Student voices matter: Your feedback highlighted some majors' requirements as a bit tangled. Our aim? To balance the Gustavus education trio: general education, electives, and majors. By keeping majors more manageable, we ensure you have room for exciting electives.
- The flexibility factor: You're not limited to just your major requirements. Feel free to take extra courses, explore new areas, double-major, or add a minor.
What do I need to do?
- Connect with your advisor: If your major is undergoing changes, your advisor is your compass. They'll guide you through the transition, helping you navigate old and new requirements seamlessly.
