General Education at GustavusChanges to How Gustavus Counts Credits
Credit Counting Changes
- Current system: Right now, Gustavus counts courses, whether it's a full course (1 course) or a half-credit course (.5 course).
- New system: Moving forward, Gustavus will be counting credits. A full credit course, equivalent to our current 1 course, will now be four credits. That .5 course you're familiar with? It's transforming into 2 credits.
- Graduation requirements: The number of credits needed to graduate is moving from 34 courses to 128 credits.
Why the change?
- Simplified credit language: We're aligning with the norm. Most colleges count credits, just like Gustavus now does. This means smoother credit transfers – both in and out of Gustavus.
- User-friendly structure: Say goodbye to decimals! Counting whole numbers is simpler and easier to grasp. Gustavus is making understanding your academic progress easier.
- Reflecting your efforts: Your time matters! In this update, we're ensuring that courses, like labs and ensembles, previously considered 0 credits, will now carry credit. Your credits will truly mirror the time you spend in class. It's a positive change that puts your academic journey into clearer focus.
What do I need to do?
- No action required: You don't have to lift a finger. The upcoming change will seamlessly appear on your degree audit and transcript by next fall.
- Spring 2024 registration: While we transition between counting systems, Spring 2024 registration will bridge the gap. You'll register for Fall 2024 courses under the new credit system. Instead of 3 to 4 courses, you'll now aim for 12 to 16 credits to maintain full-time student status.
- Degree audit transition: During this registration period, your degree audit may still showcase the old system, but fear not – resources will be available to guide you through the process and ensure a seamless transition. We're here to make this change as smooth as possible for you!
