Jed Friedrich begins his 3rd year in 2016 as Equipment Manager and Club Nordic Ski Coach after serving 10 years as the Varsity Nordic Ski Coach at Gustavus. Friedrich also spent five years as the Head Cross Country Coach and served as an instructor for the HES department.
In 2014, Friedrich's Nordic Ski team captured the Women's MN Championship, edging out St. Scholastica. The men's team finished 5th at the NCAA Central Regional Championships. Friedrich coached Tyler Gustafson to earn a spot on the World Junior Championship Team in Biathlon. In March 2014, Gustavus transitioned Nordic Skiing from Varsity to Club Sport Status.
Friedrich coached male skier and All-CCSA performer Jens Brabbit to the NCAA National Championships in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and 2011.
As the women's Nordic ski coach, Friedrich was named the CCSA Women's Nordic Ski Coach of the Year in 2008 after the team finished second at the NCAA Regional Championships. That same year, three skiers qualified for the NCAA National Championships. Friedrich again led the Gusties to the NCAA Skiing Championships in 2009 as Kelly Chaudoin qualified for the second time in her career. Chandra Daw became the first Gustie in school history to qualify for the NCAA championships in 2006.
Friedrich, a St. Cloud native and 2003 graduate of Northern Michigan University, was a two-time All-State Skier at St. Cloud Apollo High School. At NMU, he was a member of the NCAA Regional Championship teams in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He received All-America Scholar honors from the Nordic Ski Coaches Association in the same three years. Friedrich served as an assistant at his alma mater in 2002 and later accepted a teaching and coaching position at Herman-Norcross Community School in 2003. While there, he taught health and physical education and served as the assistant girls' volleyball coach, assistant boy's basketball coach and assistant track and field coach.
