Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarship

$2,000-$8,000 annually ($8,000-$32,000 over four years)

Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarships support students continuing their participation in music at Gustavus. Students do not need to major or minor within the department to qualify for or maintain the scholarship.

To Apply:

  1. Submit an Application for Admission to Gustavus Adolphus College
  2. Apply for the Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarship
  3. Submit all supporting materials:
  • Music Resume
  • Music Audition (YouTube video)

You may apply for the Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarship in multiple performance areas-- for example, you may submit one application for voice and another for piano. Separate application forms and resumes must be completed for each performance area. However, only one music award will be granted.

Audition Instructions:

All Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarship applicants must audition by emailing a link to an UNLISTED YouTube video recording of their performance. Send this link to ameier@gustavus.edu. Auditions will consist of two contrasting pieces by different composers, totaling not more than ten minutes, that demonstrate expressive and technical skills. Please note the specific instructions below for piano auditions.

Early Action applicants for admission to Gustavus must complete the Bjorling application process and email the audition link before November 1, 2020.

Rolling Admission applicants for admission to Gustavus must complete the Bjorling application process and email the audition link before January 3, 2021.

Contact Alan Meier at ameier@gustavus.edu or 507-933-7682 with questions.

Piano Area Audition Repertoire:

Two pieces displaying contrasting characters and demonstrating technical facility and repertoire include:

  • One contrapuntal piece in two or three voices, preferably by J.S. Bach.
  • One work by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, such as the first or last movement of a sonata or a set of variations.
  • One composition from the Romantic era.
  • One impressionistic or contemporary composition written since 1900 (not contemporary Christian music or arrangement of movie music, pop music, etc.)

To Maintain:

Renewal of the scholarship requires participation in music lessons and a department approved performing ensemble.

Applicants will receive communication from the Music Scholarship Coordinator, Alan Meier (ameier@gustavus.edu), after they are admitted to Gustavus.
