Statement Of Purpose/ Mission
M-pact is a student-led organization aiming to address male under-involvement in service, leadership, spirituality, community engagement, and authentic relationship; male over-involvement in violence and power mongering; and the overall college male condition as it is impacted by the pressures and privileges of patriarchy, masculinity, and machismo. We recognizes the need for male leadership and involvement in one’s family and community throughout any walk of life. M-Pact will discuss, question, and practice ways of being and knowing ourselves as men, and as human beings as we discern masculinity. Together we will learn to better tell, hear, and engage understandings of balanced masculinity, and of humanity, in a way that can nourish more integrated and contributing lives. It has been noticed that there is a dramatic difference in involvement levels between male and female students on campus. For example, even though our student body is comprised of a 60:40 (female : male ratio), programs within the community service center experience a 79.2 : 19.8 (F : M) split. Similar splits are observed in most organizations and throughout most colleges and universities. Gustavus Adolphus College not only includes Leadership as one of its core values, and as a central point within their Strategic Plan, but also strives to be at the front of this issue and work towards becoming a more united and healthier mentoring based community. One of the college’s most recent endeavors in male leadership began in January of 2008. These meetings had a large body of representation, including members of the Dean of Students office, Center for Vocational Reflection, Community Service Center, Religion Department, Psychology Department, Athletic Department, and the Student Body. Together we discussed several ideas, gathered preliminary research, presented at the world’s largest conference on the college male, and applied for a small grant. Students have seen the need for such initiatives in male leadership and are working hard to strengthen our leadership skills as we raise awareness of men’s issues and discern masculinity. Gustavus’ males need a forum to discuss men’s issues and our greater global community needs men to become better leaders and more involved within our families and community.
