Statement Of Purpose/ Mission
The purpose of the Gustavus chapter, Alpha of Minnesota, of Lambda Alpha, the National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology, is to promote academic excellence and scholarship in the discipline of anthropology and to develop the skills of honor students in research and scholarly composition. This will be accomplished by attending and presenting at local and national undergraduate and professional academic conferences; contributing to the activities of the national Lambda Alpha Honors Society through publication in its journal; promoting forums for faculty (from Gustavus Adolphus and other institutions) and honor student discussions of their current independent research in preparation for publication and conference presentation; etc.
Constitution
Constitution of the Gustavus Adolphus Lambda Alpha Honors Society in Anthropology Article I. Name of Club. Section 1. The name of this society shall be Lambda Alpha Honors Society in Anthropology, Alpha chapter of Minnesota. Article II. Purpose. Section 1. The purpose of this organization is to promote academic excellence and scholarship in the discipline of anthropology and to develop the skills of honor students in research and scholarly composition. Section 2. The purpose will be accomplished by attending and presenting at local and national undergraduate and professional academic conferences; contributing to the activities of the national Lambda Alpha Honors Society through publication in its journal; promoting forums for faculty (from Gustavus Adolphus and other institutions) and honor student discussions of their current independent research in preparation for publication and conference presentation; etc. Article III. Membership. Section 1. National membership requirements assume that currently enrolled undergraduate students at Gustavus Adolphus College have received not less than four credits in sociology/anthropology and at least three of these credits are in anthropology (two of them electives) for Full Membership and two for Associate Membership (Cultural and one elective or two electives) in the local Gustavus chapter of Lambda Alpha. Only Full Members may participate in the benefits of the national membership, while both may participate equally in the activities of the local Gustavus chapter. Undergraduates must have an average grade point average in sociology/ anthropology courses of not less than 3.33 and also a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.33. Only Juniors and Seniors are eligible for Full Membership, while Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are eligible for Associate Membership. Section 2. Membership is open to all sociology/anthropology majors, minors, and others who have pursued the required coursework and have fulfilled the academic requirements in section 1 for either Full Membership or Associate Membership, respectively. Section 3. The Gustavus Adolphus sociology/anthropology faculty are to be considered associate members of Lambda Alpha and will enjoy voting rights but do not hold office. Article IV. Membership Fee. Section 1. Total fees for the lifetime national membership are $25.00. This sum is paid to the national chapter of Lambda Alpha. Section 2. The national office may make fee changes at any time. Section 3. Payment of fees by all new members must be made before official induction into the club. The date of this induction will be set at the discretion of the advisor and/or club chiefs/president. Article V. Club Officers. Section 1. There shall be three kinds of club officers: chief(s), big man/woman, and scribe. Only Gustavus Adolphus students who are members of Lambda Alpha may serve as officers. Section 2. The chief(s) will act as club president(s) and will have at least the following duties: meet with the advisor as needed, ensure timely completion of all paperwork, and schedule and organize/lead club meetings. Section 3. The big man/woman will act as club treasure and will have at least the following duties: collection of dues, keeping financial records, and budget tracking as necessary. Section 4. The scribe will act as club secretary and will have at least the following duties: recording meeting minutes, making these minutes available to all club members, and assisting with paperwork and recordkeeping as necessary. Section 5. Elections shall be held annually on or around May 15 to ensure adequate time for transition between outgoing and incoming officers. However, sometimes elections may need to take place in early Fall. Officers shall be chosen by background in anthropology and interest. Anyone who is a member of Lambda Alpha can nominate and/or be a candidate for any position. Article VI. Advisor. Section 1. The ogan will act as club faculty sponsor/advisor and shall be an interested full-time faculty member of the sociology/anthropology department at Gustavus Adolphus College. Section 2. The ogan will have at least the following duties: organize club meetings regularly, advise officers as needed, and approve money disbursement.
