Pre-Dental Club Constitution
Purpose Statement:
Provide students interested in the field of Dentistry with opportunities to connect to current pre-dental students, dentists, and other dental specialists including: mentorship and shadowing programs, support and information about the dental school application process, volunteering experiences to help inform the Gustavus student body, and a network of peers with similar interests and values.
Overview of Activities:
- Bring in various speakers (dentists, specialists, dental school reps, dental students, etc.)
- Mentorship program (juniors and seniors)
- Mock interviews (juniors and seniors)
- 4 year pre-requisite course planning
- Help with dental school application/DAT
- Dental school visits (information days, tours, open houses)
- Community outreach program / dental education
Four Year Plan (8 meetings per year, one hour per meeting)
First Year: Attend 6 of the 8 meetings.
Sophomore Year: Attend 6 of the 8 meetings, volunteer in two community outreach programs, learn about DAT process/study advice.
Junior Year: Attend 6 of the 8 meetings, join mentorship program, volunteer in two community outreach programs, learn about DAT process/study opportunities, learn about the application process, participate in mock interviews (spring), encouraged to join club in leadership position.
Senior Year: Attend 6 of the 8 meetings continue mentorship program and volunteer work, learn about the application process, participate in mock interviews (fall, spring if applicable), encouraged to join leadership position.
Community Outreach:
Work with Open Door Health Center to volunteer in community outreach programs.
Discuss volunteer opportunities at local clinics with dental mentor.
Educate students of Gustavus and St. Peter about dentistry and the importance of dental hygiene during Dental Health Month (February).
Member Responsibilities
- All members must attend 75% of the meetings per semester (attend 6 of the 8 meetings) to be acknowledged as an active member of a club.
- Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors must participate in at least 2 volunteer activities per year.
- Juniors and seniors are encouraged to participate in mentorship program and join a leadership role.
Leadership Roles
President/s:
Oversee and set agenda for all Pre-Dental Club meetings, activities, and elections.
Arrange and facilitate club meetings, including bringing in speakers and helping with the
application process.
Assist Mentorship Coordinator with the mentorship program.
Organize dental school visits.
Meet with Club Advisor, Heather Banks one time per month to discuss agenda for
meeting and club activities.
Vice President (if only one president):
Assist and work with President to plan meetings and activities for the club.Be in charge of tabling and campus outreach / education of dentistry.
Aid in communication with Club Advisor, Heather Banks.
Attend all meetings and oversee the meeting if the president is gone.
Be in charge of four year pre-requisite course planning.
Volunteer and Mentorship Coordinator
Reach out to St. Peter schools to organize times for dental education sessions.
Work with Open Door to create volunteer opportunities.
Oversee the mentorship program and help club members get connected with their mentor.
Secretary:
Attend all meetings and be in charge of taking minutes for each meeting.
Take meeting attendance and track club participation.
Contribute new ideas to help forward Pre-Dental Club.
Responsible for organizing mock interviews.
Publicist:
Create posters and emails to advertise Pre-Dental Club membership and events.
Email out all meeting minutes to members and communicate information to all
Pre-Dental Club members.
Provide club members with new information regarding the dental field.
Contribute new ideas to help forward Pre-Dental Club.
Election Process
If one chooses to run for president or vice-president, they must have a running partner (either co-presidents or president and vice president).
All current club members vote for one pair of presidential candidates, one secretary, one volunteer and mentorship coordinator, and one publicist. Current executive board members must also re-run for their positions. If there is a tie in number of votes, the current executive board must come to a consensus on one candidate. Voting will be kept anonymous.
