2022-2023 French and Francophone Film Festival
Divergences: Breaking Barriers in French and Francophone Cinema

Film screenings and discussions held from October 2022 to April 2023

The 2022-2023 French and Francophone Film Festival at Gustavus Adolphus College highlights films that diverge, in their own unique ways, from predominant ideas that exist about French and Francophone studies and the French-speaking world. Join faculty from departments and programs across the Gustavus campus for discussions on select Wednesdays at 7 P.M. throughout the academic year!

Between October and April, the films in this festival will focus on the struggle for recognition of marginalized groups in different areas of the Francophone world, from the Paris suburbs to rural Mali. We will examine and confront social and cultural issues that entrench the marginalization of specific groups of people in the French-speaking world such as reproductive rights, gentrification, cultural divisions, racial inequalities, and class differences.

Funding for this film festival has been provided through a grant from the Albertine Cinémathèque, a division of the Face Foundation.

UPCOMING FILM:
The 400 Blows, directed by François Truffaut, 1959

Screening Monday, April 17 at 7PM
in the Wallenberg Auditorium

A young Parisian boy, Antoine Doinel, neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. Unlike most kids, he gets whacked with the big stick. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child’s eye.
