Meet the Mentors

2020 Mentors

 Allison James '22

Hello! My name is Allison James, and I am a rising junior at Gustavus from Eden Prairie, MN. I am a double major in Biology and Religion with plans to attend medical school after my time at Gustavus. Here on the hill, I play trumpet, sing, cross country ski, run, and work as a research assistant in the Religion Department. Growing up at Normandale Lutheran
Church (an ELCA church in Edina, MN) rooted my life in faith and prompted me to ask big questions about how science and religion coexist. I am so excited to be an academy mentor again this summer because of my deep passion about the intersection science and religion, and I cannot wait to engage in meaningful conversations with everyone!

Cora Hentges '23

Wassup! My name is Cora Hentges, and I’m a rising sophomore at Gustavus. I’m a Geology major and am also hoping to add a major in Environmental Studies as well as a minor in Studio Art. Here on campus, I’m part of the Gustavus Wind Symphony, Geo Club, the Environmental Action Coalition, the Bothersome Preacher’s Club (we lead worship on Sunday nights and we really aren’t that bothersome), and I’ll be joining a jazz ensemble next year which I’m psyched about. I’m also proud to call myself one half of a satirical Soundcloud rap duo. Off campus, I love reading good books, being outside, watching documentaries, painting, and listening to indie rock, folk, and funk. I’m super excited to be a part of the Academy this summer in spite of the circumstances, and I look forward to having conversations to connect faith, science, and ethics in our world.

Mikayla Zaske '23

Hello! My name is Mikayla Zaske and I am from Rice, Minnesota. I am going to be a sophomore at Gustavus and I am majoring in biology. My favorite spots on campus are Linnaeus Arboretum and the hot tub in Lund center. At Gustavus, I am a part of the swim and track teams. I also participate in choir. In my free time I like to read, hike, and watch movies. I am very excited to be a mentor this summer! I can’t wait to foster deep conversations that intertwine two things I am passionate about: science and faith.

Matt Payne '22

Hello! My name is Matt Payne and I just finished my sophomore year here at Gustavus. I am an environmental studies and Spanish major, and during this past spring of 2020, I studied abroad in Cusco, Peru. At Gustavus I am involved in cross country and track, volunteer at North Elementary School, and attend proclaim and chapel break. My passions are definitely centered around running and the environment. Church and my faith are also big things in my life. I have been involved in my church for my whole life and am very excited to be a part of the Academy this year. I think it is very important to have conversations about both science and faith because of the lack of conversations between the two subjects. I am really looking forward to having many interesting talks and discussions about these topics with you all soon!

Teagan Shumaker '22

Hi there! I am Teagan Shumaker. I am from Paynesville, MN and I will be a junior here at Gustavus. I am pursuing a Religion and Psychology double major with a Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies minor. At Gustavus, I am involved in Choir, Handbells, Gustavus Youth Outreach, and I am one of the leaders for both the Multifaith Leadership Council and a Christian organization called Proclaim. I'm excited to have another opportunity to grow in my faith and cultivate relationships around the connections of faith and science. I'm thrilled to get to have those conversations with all of you! See you soon!

Abbie Doran '23 Abbie Doran

Hello! My name is Abbie Doran and I am a rising sophomore from Rosemount, MN. I am a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science and I am pursuing minors in Dance and Economics. I love participating in the fine arts at Gustavus as a member of the Gustavus Dance Company and the Choir of Christ Chapel. When I am not at the studio, I love attending sporting events or chatting with friends in the courtyard! I am so excited to be a mentor this year – with this new, virtual format I am thrilled to be part of a team that is ready to explore new ways of learning together.

Here at Gustavus, I am part of various Christian ministries, a Pan-African club and the French club. In my free time, I like to read, listen to music, watch movies and to spend time with my friends. I am excited about the Academy for Faith, Science ans Ethics because I will get to learn more about how to fight cancer: learning from scholars, with my fellow mentors and our mentees.
I can’t wait to see you!
