Pell Grant

The Pell program levels the playing field with aid for low-income undergrads who want to earn a college degree. Start by filling out the FAFSA, which will determine your level of need. Pell grants are awarded based on an annual chart that’s created by the federal Department of Education. 

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

If you’re eligible for the Pell Grant and can show exceptional financial need, you may receive this federal grant of up to $4000 as part of your aid package. Students with the greatest need are awarded first, and remaining funds go to other eligible students as they last. Eligibility is based on your completed FAFSA.

Federal TEACH Grant 

If you’re working towards a career in education and you commit to teach a high-need field in a low-income school, you could get $4,000 per year toward college costs. TEACH Grants require a four-year teaching obligation. Be sure this is the right path for you, as If you don’t follow through, the grant converts to a direct federal loan if you don’t complete the four-year teaching obligation.

Minnesota

Minnesota State Grant 

Will you graduate from a Minnesota high school or be a resident of Minnesota at the time the FAFSA is completed.? Can you demonstrate financial need? If so, you might qualify for a Minnesota State Grant. To be considered, file the FAFSA within 30 days of the start of the semester. Other conditions include full-time enrollment at Gustavus with a course load of at least 15 credits per semester.

Minnesota Student Teacher Grants 

Planning to major in education or teaching? You could qualify for up to $7,500 in support for your student teaching experience. There are two types of Minnesota Student Teacher Grants:

• Minnesota Student Teachers in Shortage Areas Grant 

  This grant assists eligible students who intend to teach in a rural school district or an area with a shortage of licensed teachers. 

• Minnesota Underrepresented Student Teacher Grant

  This grant provides support to eligible students who belong to a racial or ethnic group that’s underrepresented in the Minnesota teacher workforce.

To see if you qualify, apply with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education for the term in which you’ll complete your student teaching experience.

Minnesota Fostering Independence Higher Education Grant

If you’re a Minnesota resident under age 27 and were in the foster care system at any point after turning 13, this grant may be for you. It covers the full cost of attendance at Gustavus. To see if you qualify, fill out the FAFSA or Minnesota Dream Act application.

Gustavus

Gustavus Tuition Grant 

This donor-supported grant goes to students with demonstrated financial need, and it renews annually. Your eligibility is tied to your FAFSA. If your family’s finances or other circumstances shift, your Gustavus grant aid may be adjusted.

• Keeping Your Grant

  To remain eligible for grant aid, you’ll need to file an annual FAFSA and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. If your family’s estimated financial contribution changes from one year to the next, that may impact the amount of your grant.
