Assistant Men's Basketball Coach & Strength and Conditioning in Athletics

The 2022-23 season will be Chris VanderHyde’s first season as the lead assistant at Gustavus. VanderHyde was an assistant coach under Mark Hanson for five seasons prior to being named lead assistant for Justin DeGrood in 2022. Before arriving at Gustavus, VanderHyde was the head girls’ basketball coach at Park Center for four seasons where he compiled a record of 100-26 and led the team to two AAA state championships and two AAAA state tournament appearances. VanderHyde graduated from Hope College with BA in Kinesiology, Mathematics, and Education in 2002. VanderHyde has a strong background in education including 20 years of classroom teaching, 10 years coaching in the MIAC (five years as an assistant at Bethel and five years as an assistant at Gustavus), and 10 years of coaching high school basketball.
