Session Descriptions

Keynote: Trends in Mental Health for College Students & Tools for Preparing Students Now
Presenter: Hannah Repp PsyD LP, Director of the Gustavus Adolphus College Counseling Center

To open the day, Hannah will speak to current mental health trends in the college population and how Gustavus has shaped their services to respond effectively. She will share some tools that can be used to help students adjust to college life including frameworks for loneliness, managing stress cycles, and developing resiliency.

Workshop Option 1: Cultivating a Trauma-Informed Campus
Presenter: Jackie Ortmeier-Crance, MS, LPC

As mental health professionals, we all understand the impact trauma has on youth in learning environments. However, it can be difficult to adapt our systems to be more trauma-informed, and to encourage those we regularly work alongside to adapt theirs. In this workshop, you will review basics of trauma-informed care, learn how the Gustavus Counseling Center works within the college to cultivate a more trauma-informed campus, and learn ideas for implementing this framework in your own school.

Workshop Option 2: Visualize Away Procrastination
Presenter: Aaron Geringer, MS, MA, LPCC

College marks a transition where students must become more self-reliant in utilizing executive functioning skills, such as time management and task prioritization, which can be particularly challenging for neurodivergent students. This shift from receiving support from adults in K-12 years to greater independence often leads to procrastination and accountability issues in their academic work. This workshop introduces the Mental Contrasting Implementation Intentions Visualization Process (MCIIVP), a four-step technique designed to help participants overcome procrastination, boost motivation, and create an actionable plan to complete tasks effectively. MCIIVP can be a helpful tool to teach high school students as they prepare to enter college.

Panel & Discussion: Navigating Support Networks
Moderator: Hannah Repp PsyD LP

Engage with a panel of campus community members as they discuss how students navigate the college transition and utilize support networks across campus. Panelists will include representatives from the following areas: Counseling Center, Center for Inclusive Excellence, Academics, Peer Education, and more. Time will be given for sharing ideas, asking questions, and collaborating with other school counselors.
