Requirements for Major and Minor

Spanish Major

The major consists of nine courses. The requirements are as follows:

  • Courses must be graded C or better to fulfill the requirement for the major.
  • SP A-250, SP A-280, SP A-330, SP A-320, SP A-321, SP A-370, and either a) SP A-322 or SP A-323 and two courses approved by the advisor and selected from SP A-344, SP A-375, SP A-390 or b) SP A-322, SP A-323, and one selected from SP A-344, SP A-375, SP A-390. In addition, the last semester before their graduation, majors must register for SP A-099 and must work on their senior portfolio.
  • In the last semester before graduation all Spanish majors must register for SPA099 and complete the Portfolio that they will have developed throughout their program of study. Portfolios must contain sample work from your various courses and a reflective self-evaluation statement discussing your learning experience in the major. The portfolio will serve to assess your progress in the curriculum and to synthesize your total experience as a major, as well as an evidence of your linguistic and cultural competency.
  • Study abroad in the region of interest for at least one semester is highly recommended and a course on the culture of the region is highly recommended before studying abroad. Students are expected to consult with their advisor when selecting courses and making plans to study abroad.

Spanish Teaching Major

  • Admission to the Spanish Teaching major is by application and interview in the Department of Education, normally during the sophomore year.
  • Spanish Teaching majors must complete all Spanish major requirements, MLC-357, and all courses required for licensure, including student teaching (see Department of Education).

Minor

The minor consists of five courses. The requirements are as follows:

  • Courses must be graded C or better to fulfill the requirement for the minor.
  • SPA-250, SPA-280, SPA-321 or SPA-323, SPA-320 or SPA-322, and one other course taught in Spanish above SPA-250.
