Requirements for Major and Minor

Spanish Major

The major consists of 10 courses. 

  • Courses must be graded C or better to fulfill the requirement for the major.
  • SPA 201 (Mundo Hispano III) and SPA 202 (Crossing Borders) - These credits are waived for students who start the Spanish major at any level above SPA 202.
  • Taking at least two courses at the 200-level above SPA 202. Some course offerings at this level include, but are not limited to:
    • SPA 220: From Latin America to Latinx
    • SPA 221: Local/Global: Faces of Spain
    • SPA 230: Beyond Translation
    • SPA 244: Special Topics
    • SPA 250: Negotiating Difference in Hispanic World
    • SPA 251: Love and Society in the Hispanic World
    • SPA 254: Hispanic Fantasy and Horror
    • SPA 255: Heroes and Demons in Latin America
    • SPA 280: Literature, Film, and Society
    • other course offerings above 202 at the 2xx level.
  • Taking at least four courses at the 300-level. Some course offerings at this level include, but are not limited to :
    • SPA 322: Literary Cities of Latin America
    • SPA 344: Special Topics
    • SPA 350: Rural Spaces in Spanish Literature and Media
    • SPA 370: Spanish Through Linguistics
    • SPA 375: Gender and Sexual Identities in the Spanish-speaking World
    • SPA 376: Cultures of Peace and Armed Conflict in Latin America
    • SPA 390: Through the Lens
    • other course offerings at the 3xx level 
  • One of the courses taken for the major must carry a WRIT-D or WRIT-L designation. Some course offerings at this level include, but are not limited to:
    • SPA 250: Negotiating Difference in the Hispanic World (WRIT-L)
    • SPA 251: Thinking in Spanish Beyond Translation (WRIT-D)
    • SPA 376: Cultures of Peace and Armed Conflict in Latin America (WRIT-D)
    • or other WRIT-L or WRIT-D courses in the Spanish program.
  • Up to one course in the major may be taught in English, from a list of approved courses. Some course offerings at this level include, but are not limited to:
    • MLC 277: Latinx FIlm
    • MLC 298 352: Challenge Seminar on Latin American Challenges - Extractivism
    • MLC 298 349: Challenge Seminar on Latin American and Spanish Representations
    • LAS 399: LALACS Senior capstone - with permission from the professor and the LALACS program director 
  • Study abroad in the region of interest for at least one semester is highly recommended and a course on the culture of the region is highly recommended before studying abroad. Students are expected to consult with their advisor when selecting courses and making plans to study abroad.

Spanish Teaching Major

  • Admission to the Spanish Teaching major is by application and interview in the Department of Education, normally during the sophomore year.
  • Spanish Teaching majors must complete all Spanish major requirements, the foreign language teaching methods course offered in the Department of Education, and all courses required for licensure, including student teaching (see Department of Education).

Minor

The minor consists of six courses. The requirements are as follows:
