About the Spanish Section
Our Vision
At Gustavus, we encourage our students to become confident communicators and lifelong learners. We want our students to respect and value the socioeconomic and cultural differences present in our globalized society and to become critical thinkers. Our curriculum offers students hands-on experience in Spanish-speaking communities at home and abroad, enabling them to become translingually and transculturally competent as they seek to achieve their goals.
To this end,
- We offer a major and a minor in Spanish.
- We offer courses in language, Literatures, linguistics, and culture.
- We encourage our students to practice the language on campus (La mesa de español) and through a community-based education that gives them practical experience with working in the language and engaging in intercultural exchanges.
- We encourage our students to experience Hispanic culture by studying abroad and living with host families.
- We celebrate Hispanic events and collaborate with student organizations to create meaningful activities for students, and for the community at large.
