We celebrate 44 years as a friends-of-the-college organization dedicated to the support and advancement of the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library at Gustavus. An active board of directors (30 regular and 34 emirita members) plans a year-long calendar of events including a Fall Fika Friends event, Author Days, a Scandinavian Smorgasbord Luncheon celebrating the Festival of St. Lucia, and Books in Bloom. All supporters receive invitations to these events.

Upcoming Events

A Royal Affair, a biennial gala benefit, is the primary fundraiser for the library. Nearly $2,500,000 has been raised for the library endowment through these events. The next gala will be held on November 12, 2022.

The Gustavus Library Associates-Friends of the Library has over 150 annual supporters, with gifts given by friends dedicated directly to the acquisitions budget.

The Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library is full of contrasts: both quiet and bustling, offering both print and digital resources, providing spaces for both individuals and groups. True to the words on our website, “Libraries are for everyone.”

Your support, at any level, allows the Library to:

  • purchase literary works and buy materials supporting the fine arts and other creative endeavors
  • provide access to cutting edge research in STEM disciplines and the health sciences
  • serve as a lab for students in the Humanities and Social Sciences through our print collections, primary sources, and subscription databases
  • bring the College’s history to life through digitization projects and by enhancing our archival collections
  • create functional and comfortable study spaces for students through new furnishings and additional study rooms
  • meet the needs of 21st century learners by acquiring licenses for streaming video and music
  • ensure that students and faculty have access to a wide range of research through the library’s print and electronic journal subscriptions
  • support scholarship and creativity on campus through subscriptions to disciplinary and interdisciplinary online databases
