Your Story:

Hi! My name is Dawn Comstock, a senior from Roseau, MN. I chose Gustavus after attending Tennis and Life camp here the summer before my sophomore year of high school. I met Dr. Lammert in the hallway and had a great conversation with him. All of the staff, students and professors I met were so incredibly personable and I fell in love with the community.

My interest in pre-medicine started when I got to college. Initially, when I started at Gustavus I was planning on being an optometrist, but after awhile I changed to pre-med. Gustavus really opened my eyes to a world of possibilities. I’ve always wanted to work with people and have enjoyed science classes, so medicine seemed to be a good combination!

My most influential experience at Gustavus in confirming the pre-medicine path was the Mayo Innovation Scholars Program. We had the opportunity to work closely with physicians, nurses and administrators at the Mayo Clinic, which offered an unparalleled opportunity to learn about healthcare.

  • National Cancer Institute research internship
  • Job Shadowing at Uppsala University Hospital and a research internship at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm Sweden
  • HHMI research J-term and summer program at Syracuse University and Gustavus
  • Conversing with the King and Queen of Sweden in Swedish!

 

Advice:

Try to think of three things....you wish you would have know or would encourage others to do....

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Professors are here because they love teaching and want to help students succeed.
  • Figure out what it is that you are passionate about, and what you really enjoy. Then seek out opportunities to pursue it!
  • Be yourself.

 

Future Plans:

I'm currently exploring my clinical and research interests. My long term future plan is to become a skilled clinician, researcher, educator, and patient advocate.

Attending Harvard Medical School, starting Fall 2014!
