McKenna Robb '23Physical Therapy
Name: McKenna Robb
Graduation Year: 2023
Major: Exercise Physiology
My Story: I have known since 7th grade that I wanted to pursue a career as a physical therapist. I, personally, have gone through physical therapy, as a patient, multiple times throughout my sports career and will never forget the lasting impact that my physical therapist had on me. I also knew since elementary school that I wanted to attend Gustavus. I grew up going to many of the sports camps and loved the close proximity to my hometown, as well as the great reputation that Gustavus had, which made it a no-brainer for me.
I decided to major in exercise physiology as that is one of the recommended majors for those applying to physical therapy school, as well as something that I was very interested in. Due to a handful of college credits that I was able to transfer from high school classes, I am able to graduate a year early from Gustavus. This means that I was able to start applying for physical therapy school during the summer 2022 application cycle and will be graduating from Gustavus in May of 2023. Following graduation, I will be attending St. Catherine’s University - Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
Applying for physical therapy school is a very daunting process but, thankfully, the Office of Health Professions made things much less complicated and were very supportive throughout the entire process. Whether it be helping with my personal statement, proofreading and giving feedback on my essays, or performing mock interviews, they were always willing to help. I know that Gustavus has prepared me in the best way possible for physical therapy school, and I am forever grateful for that.
Top Five Activities/Experiences: (in no particular order)
1. Pre-PT/OT Club
2. Shadowing different physical therapists
3. Christmas in Christ Chapel
4. Intramurals
5. Exercise Physiology Lab Experience
Advice:
1. Volunteer! I believe that all of my volunteer experiences are something that really pushed me over the edge when applying for physical therapy school, so try to get involved as much as possible.
2. Ask questions! College is hard and sometimes it can be difficult to gather the courage to ask your professors questions if you are struggling. That is what they are there for and most actually appreciate you putting in the effort to ask them for help if you are struggling.
3. Enjoy it! Sometimes we get too caught up in our school work that we forget to enjoy our time at Gustavus. College is definitely about balance so make sure you are taking time to do fun things, as well.
Future Plans:
Attending St. Catherine’s University - Doctor of Physical Therapy program, starting Fall 2023.
