Name: Thomas Fischer

Graduation Year: 2020

Major: Athletic Training with Coaching Minor

Your Story: My names is Thomas Fischer and I grew up in Marshall, MN. After suffering an injury in high school, I became very interested in the career of physical therapy. After observing over 200 hours in four different physical therapy
settings, I became much more confident in my decision to pursue physical therapy. Being an athletic training student at Gustavus has prepared me to be a successful health care provider. I applied for graduate school in the summer after my junior year and was accepted to St. Kate’s for their DPT program in September 2019 of my senior year.

Top Five Activities/Experiences:

1. Gustavus Baseball Team

2. Big Partner Little Partner Coordinator

3. Student Athlete Volunteer Educators (SAVE)

4. Pre PT/OT Club President

5. Gustavus Athletic Trainers’ Association President

Advice:
1. Be involved in as many things as you can, you never know which experiences you
may like or may inspire you.

2. Graduate school admissions are competitive, but do not worry if you do not get perfect grades. The application process is a holistic review so all aspects of your applications are considered. You do not have to have perfect grades to be a strong candidate.

3. Work hard, but don’t forget to enjoy your time in school, it goes very fast!

Future Plans:
Attend St. Kate’s for their Doctorate of Physical Therapy program starting in the fall
of 2020. After graduate school, work as a dual credentialed physical therapist and
athletic trainer.
