Laboratory Safety

Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene is managed by the Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Officer (CHLSO) at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) describes the policy that Gustavus Adolphus College implements to maintain safe laboratory conditions for Gustavus employees and students, you can find a copy of the CHP here: Chemical Hygiene Plan

For service dogs in laboratory environments, you will find an addendum to the CHP here describing the policy and procedures for ensuring the safety of the service dog, lab personnel, and participants, while maintaining access and equity for these specific student accommodations: Service Animals in Labs

Laboratory safety training is required annually for Gustavus employees (faculty, staff, student employees, teaching assistants) that work with chemical hazards. You can find more detailed information on laboratory safety and the laboratory safety training program through CITI in the following document: Laboratory Safety Training

Reporting of laboratory safety incidents is mandatory. However, please call Campus Safety (x8888) if there is an emergency or a laboratory incident that exceeds your capacity to manage. Please use the following form to report a laboratory safety incident: Incident Report Form

As part of our commitment to laboratory safety, please do not hesitate to contact the CHLSO to discuss laboratory safety interventions such as PPE, to discuss safety considerations for a new lab protocol/experiment, to monitor the air quality of a lab, or to view and discuss safety considerations for a laboratory space, or any of the policy and procedures described herein.

Our labs and research projects may also include outdoor activities, which require attentiveness to safety as well as unique considerations for working off-campus and in remote locations. Please consider using the following field safety protocol (adapted from the U.S. Antarctic Program) as part of your planning and communication strategy in developing a field-based activity: Field Safety Protocol
