Save the Date...The Diversity Center asks that you please join us in welcoming Ericka Huggins to campus on Monday, February 20 and Tuesday, February 21 as part of our Black History Month programming.
Ericka Huggins is a human rights activist, poet, educator, Black Panther leader, and former political prisoner. For the past 30 years, she has lectured throughout the United States and internationally. Her extraordinary life experiences have enabled her to speak personally and eloquently on issues relating to the physical and emotional well-being of women, children and youth, whole being education. She has also spoken on issues of over incarceration, and the role of the spiritual practice in sustaining activism and promoting change. On Monday, February 20 and Tuesday, February 21, Ericka Huggins will join the Gustavus community for a film screening of The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution followed by a one-hour Q&A, and a lecture on "Igniting a Grassroots Movement in the 21st Century." More details about both events are listed below.
Monday, February 20 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. in Wallenberg
The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution Film Screening and Q&A. The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and many others, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America.
Tuesday, February 21 from 7-9 p.m. in Alumni Hall
"Igniting a Grassroots Movement in the 21st Century,” Ericka Huggins' Keynote Address
We ask that you please save the date, spread the word, encourage colleagues, students, and others to attend, and plan to join us. It's an opportunity you won't want to miss.
Risk Management Minute: Rushing Has Its Risks...When we are in a hurry, we are more likely to take a short cut off of a designated walkway onto uneven or slippery terrain, move blindly around corners and into a classmate or coworker, overlook a slick spot or uneven pavement, not change into safer footwear and carry too much. You can find ways to slow down if you add travel time to your calendar, avoid back-to-back appointments, allot extra time for the unexpected (or to arrive early and relaxed), schedule time for extra trips rather than carrying more than you can safely handle, stop for a moment to notice the moment you are in and remember that rushing can add stress and lead to slips, trips, and falls. For questions or more information on risk management, contact Dale Plemmons, Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (x7494).
Save the Date: Third Annual Matthias Wahlstrom Lecture...Please mark your calendar for Monday, February 20, 2017, 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Beck Hall 101. Michele Rusinko, professor of theatre and dance, will present her talk entitled “Creativity, Resiliency, Dignity and a Good Life.” President Rebecca Bergman will introduce Rusinko, and refreshments will be provided for conversation after the lecture. https://gustavus.edu/provost/wahlstromlecture.php
