Joakim Ekfeldt '17 (Economics) and Amirjon Makhkamov '17 (Economics) participated in an IFSA-Butler fall 2015 study abroad program and made the program's Academic Achievement List. The Academic Achievement List – similar to a Dean's List – includes students who have maintained a high GPA in their IFSA-Butler study abroad program while engaging with the program's intercultural learning opportunities.

President Cabinet Summary   

1.  Glen Lloyd, chair of the President’s Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was present to review with members a preliminary draft of the “Blueprint for Progress.” 
2.  Discussion was held regarding the recommended vision statement for the strategic plan Gustavus Acts.
3.  Members reviewed the draft powerpoint for the May 19 all-employee meeting.
4.  Discussion was held regarding planning for the FY 2017 operating budget, including hearing an enrollment report.

News and Announcements   

Farewell Party...The provost's office invites the Gustavus community to join us as we say goodbye and best wishes to Paula O'Loughlin. Refreshments will be served. We hope you will stop by to wish Paula well in future endeavors between 10:30 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, May 25, in Office of the Provost’s reception area.

Retirement Celebration...Please join the College community in saying thank you to Ken Westphal for his exemplary service to Gustavus at a reception from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, in the Heritage Room. A short program will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Gustavus Employee Picnic 2016...The Gustavus Employee Picnic will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, in the Evelyn Young Dining Room. There will be a full picnic menu and entertainment by funny man Bob Stromberg, co-author and one of the original stars of theatrical comedy Triple Espresso.

Commencement Ushers...Any students or staff who are willing to serve as commencement ushers this year should contact Lorie Siebels in the Office of Marketing and Communication at 933-7520 or lsiebels@gustavus.eduYou would need to arrive by 11:45 a.m. and would be able to leave after commencement starts at 2 p.m.

2016 Valleyfair Ticket Tickets...Discounted Valleyfair tickets are available to purchase in the Office of Human Resources, located in the Carlson Administration Building. Tickets are good for any day during the 2016 season. Tickets may be purchased for regular admission (ages 3-61 and 48” or taller) for $32.25, junior/senior (ages 3-61, under 48” tall or 62+ years and includes admission to Dinosaurs Alive!) for $32.25, Dinosaurs Alive! tickets for $2.75 with adult park admission, parking $12.00, and ride & refresh (ages 3-61 and 48” or taller plus unlimited drink wristband) for $39.75. Cash or checks payable to Gustavus.

2016 Moe Lecture.. Kimberle Crenshaw available for viewing. Members of the Gustavus community can view a replay of Prof. Kimberle Crenshaw's 2016 Moe Lecture by visiting https://gustavus.edu/gwss/moe. The lecture, entitled "Intersectionality Matters: Why We Can't Wait for a Racial Justice Agenda that Centers Us All," will be available until May 2017; your Gustavus login will be required. 

Audio Video Equipment/Books and DVDs During Summer Months... Video camera kits, tripods, and/or projectors will not be available for checkout from the library from June 10 to August 22. If you were planning on using such equipment during these summer months, please contact Mark Kump, x7571 or mkump@gustavus.edu prior to June 6 to make permissible arrangements. Please also expect a delay with the processing and availability of books and DVDs purchased from June 10 to August 22. If you need materials for fall semester courses, please plan accordingly.

Library Hours for Finals... Thursday, May 19 & Friday, May 20: 8 a.m.-1 a.m.; Saturday, May 21: 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sunday, May 22: 11 a.m.-1 a.m.; Monday, May 23: 8 a.m.-1 a.m.; Tuesday, May 24-Friday, May 27: 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m.

Parking Regulations...Permit parking enforcement continues through Commencement. Please park according to permit color and note that parking is enforced during finals and senior week.

  • Summer parking begins May 30. Vehicles on campus may park in any red or green permit space after Commencement through August 29, when we ask all employees and returning students to park according to permit color. 
  • Visitor parking is closed to students and staff at all times and is always enforced 24/7/365. Specially marked parking spaces (handicap, special permit, etc) are also always enforced. 
  • Student (red) permit registration for 2016-2017 parking passes will be available online beginning June 20. 
  • This cycle of employee (green) permits all expire August 2016, so all employees will need to register for new parking stickers over the summer/before classes resume in the fall, which will be valid through August 2019. Information will be sent out when the new parking stickers are available.

College Post Office - Summer Window Hours...May 31 to August 12, the College Post Office window will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Print services and the mailroom will maintain their current hours. 

Until Next Time...This week's Inside Gustavus (May 19) is the final edition of the 2015-16 academic year. The weekly online publication will resume on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, for the 2016-17 year. To announce events and information to the College community during the summer months, the Office of Marketing and Communication will publish the Summer Scoop online on a monthly basis (tentatively June 21, July 19, and August 16). If you have anything that you would like included in the Summer Scoop, please submit it online. Any events should also be submitted to the College Calendar.

Campus Happenings   

Commencement...The College's 2016 commencement exercises will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29 on Hollingsworth Field. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved inside Lund Center. Any announcement about moving the ceremony indoors will be made on the College's website and its social media channels. Senior Delaney Sweet will deliver this year's commencement address. Earlier in the morning, the College will host a pair of baccalaureate services at 9 and 10:30 a.m. in Christ Chapel. Complimentary tickets for the baccalaureate services can be reserved online at gustavustickets.com. A commencement buffet will be held in the Evelyn Young Dining Room from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $16 each and $7 for children under six years of age. Buffet tickets can also be purchased online at gustavustickets.com.

Robotics Open House...The Saint Peter Area Robotics Association will be hosting an open house in the basement of Beck Academic Hall on Tuesday, May 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. All three levels of robots will be on display, FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). There will be opportunities to build, program, and drive robots. Please contact Chuck Niederriter if you have any questions. 

The WORD Play Festival will be held at Gustavus on May 26 and 27. The literary gathering will include readings by Gustavus faculty, an open mic session, and a buffet dinner. Full event details are available online, additional information can be requested from Julie Johnson.

Senior Joey Wiley was profiled in his hometown Woodbury Bulletin for winning a Fulbright to Malaysia next year.

The St. Peter Herald announced Mary Joos' selection as the 2016 recipient of the Swenson-Bunn Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence.

Baseball coach Brad Baker was featured in a WCCO-TV piece on his legacy at Gustavus and in Saint Peter.

The Mankato Free Press highlighted the senior art majors show that runs in the Hillstrom Museum of Art through May 29.

Senior Jack Anderson and professor Paul Estenson appeared on Pioneer Public Television Sunday as part of a program on rural and youth entrepreneurship. (Gustavus segment begins at 1:35.)

Professor Leila Brammer was interviewed by Roshini Rajkumar on WCCO Radio about the presidential election.

Dwight Stoll's Faculty Scholarly Achievement Award was announced in the St. Peter Herald.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication. It is published weekly during the academic year (except during the week of Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Touring Week, and the Spring and Easter breaks).
