Alumni and Administrator
Born and raised in Farmington, Minn., Jacob "JJ" Akin studied English and geography at Gustavus Adolphus College. During his time as a student, he also played on the football team and was involved with The Gustavian Weekly and Firethorne. During his senior year, Akin completed an internship in the Gustavus Department of Sports Information, which gave him the opportunity to write game notes and post-game stories, prepare programs, and broadcast sporting events.
After graduating in 2011, he returned to Farmington to work in Community Education before accepting a position in the Gustavus Office of Admission in January 2012. During his three and a half years there, Akin recruited students and was responsible for mass communications, marketing, and technology for the admission office. In addition to conceptualizing, writing, and updating marketing materials, he managed the office's vendor relationships and operated social media accounts for admission.
Akin was named the Director of Media Relations & Internal Communication in September 2015. In his current role, he is responsible for cultivating relationships with the media, placing Gustavus stories in local, regional, and national publications, and producing content for the Gustavus website. Akin also manages the College's institutional social media accounts, produces and edits internal communication pieces, and is a member of the emergency communication team.
