Breena BrockmannFaculty
I joined the Communication Studies Department in 2019 and teach a variety of classes in rhetoric, gender, political communication, and public discourse. I’ve also had the opportunity to design and teach courses on War and Security Discourse, Women World Leaders, and Rhetoric and Citizenship. In many ways, joining Gustavus felt like coming home. As an undergraduate student, I had the wonderful experience of attending a liberal arts college and am thrilled to now be teaching at one myself.
What I love most about teaching at Gustavus is getting to know my students by working on projects that are meaningful to them, whether it be solving a community problem in Public Discourse or analyzing a speech in Rhetorical Criticism. My goal as a teacher is to introduce students to theories, methods, ideas, and perspectives that enable them to advocate for the things they care about and to think critically about the messages they encounter daily.
My own research interests are focused on the intersections of gender, policy rhetoric, and political institutions. I’m particularly interested in feminist activism and how women work together to forge solidarities across difference and influence national and global policymaking.
