Overview
This is the one you have been waiting for! Experience Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro with Gustavus Professor Emeritus and international scholar of Southeastern Europe, Dr. Tom Emmert. This 13-day Gustavus study tour combines learning, exploring, leisure, lecture, food, and arts with special touches, all led by a faculty expert.
The journey is focused around three new countries once part of Yugoslavia: Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. The group will visit intriguing cities and idyllic Adriatic towns as we learn about the historical significance of this part of the world and consider the issues which shape their new 21st century life. Start the journey in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, a little jewel of the one-time Habsburg Empire. Travel through the rolling hills of Bosnia and experience the influence of Ottoman culture on the beautiful cities of Sarajevo and Mostar. Finish the tour on the majestic Adriatic coast with unforgettable days on the island of Hvar, in the walled city of Dubrovnik, and in the gorgeous Montenegrin fjord of Kotor.
Program Leader
Tom Emmert joined the Gustavus History Department in 1973 and retired in 2011. A native of Minnesota, Tom developed his passion for history and Eastern Europe while a student at St. Olaf College. He studied in Yugoslavia and at Oxford University as an undergraduate. He enjoyed six years of graduate education at Stanford University. Trained as a specialist in medieval Serbia, Emmert prepared his doctoral dissertation in Belgrade as a Fulbright Scholar.
At Gustavus, Tom taught the European history survey, as well as courses on both Imperial and modern Russia, the Ottoman Empire, 19th century European intellectual and cultural movements, and Balkan nationalism. In 1994 Tom received the Edgar Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching at Gustavus.
Tom loves travel, music, biking, gardening, good food, and great conversation. During his years at Gustavus he directed two semester-long programs in Zagreb, Croatia and two others in Wittenberg and Berlin, Germany. He has also led numerous alumni study trips for Stanford University and the Smithsonian Institute. In 2013, Tom led a sold out Gustavus Study Tour to Central Europe.
