President Cabinet Summary
October 1, 2019, Cabinet Meeting Summary
1. Reflections were shared regarding the Campaign Kickoff and Alumni Awards Dinner.
2. Vice President Tunheim provided an update on the Gustavus Acts Strategic Plan. Priorities are being reviewed and we plan to have an updated Acts II booklet by the end of the year.
3. Chaplain and Special Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Siri Erickson provided an update on the Strategic Plan initiatives for PCDEI, President’s Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Working Groups are being identified, including Training, Communication, and Inclusive Excellence. Cabinet members also reviewed the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) document.
4. Director of Johnson Center for Environmental Innovation Jim Dontje provided an update on Strategic Plan initiatives regarding thoughts on how to move forward.
5. Members approved the hiring of a replacement 11-month Academic Affairs position (Information Desk and Assets Specialist).
6. Vice President Tunheim presented an update on the compensation analysis project. Benefits Specialist Nicole Goebel and Director of Finance Operations and Payroll Barb Lundgren will plan to attend a Cabinet meeting in October.
7. Vice President Tunheim presented an update on the Disability Policy and Medical Leave policy. Cabinet requested additional information regarding employment law on medical leave, short-term disability, and long-term disability.
8. Discussion was held regarding the activities surrounding the September Board Meeting.
9. Discussion was held regarding the Admission Report and Retention Update.

Christmas in Christ Chapel - Reservable seating...Plans are already well underway for Christmas in Christ Chapel, happening December 5-8. New this year is that the opening night will be on Thursday and the last service will be on Sunday afternoon. Like last year, guests will select specific reservable seats in Christ Chapel at the time of ticket purchase. There will no longer be general admission seating. A Royal Affair - A Gustie Gala...Get your crown on for the biennial A Royal Affair fundraiser happening Saturday, November 9 at the JW Marriott Hotel - Mall of America. This is a fun party with food, drinks, music, dancing, an auction, and amazing entertainment by Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling ’89 and Hollywood actor Peter Breitmayer ’87 serving as emcee. Funds raised will fund scholarships for first-generation college students with high academic performance and significant economic need, and strengthen the Gustavus library endowment. Public Talks by Eban Goodstein... Eban Goodstein, PhD will give two public talks next week: "How to Get a Job Saving the Planet: Sustainability Careers in Business, NGOs & Government" on Thursday, October 10 at 11:45 a.m. in The Dive (free pizza!) and "How to Solve Climate by 2030: We CAN Change the FUTURE" on Thursday, October 10 at 6 p.m. in Beck 101.
Patricia Lindell Scholarship Application Open...This $1,200 scholarship (established by the Gustavus Library Associates) is open to any junior or senior student to undertake a research project for the library that benefits the wider Gustavus community. The scholarship is awarded upon the successful completion of the project.
Applicants are strongly recommended to apply for independent study credit during the spring semester (up to .5 credits).
This year's project will explore how the library can improve its website to better serve student needs. The recipient will conduct qualitative research, investigate best practices for library websites, and propose changes to the website.

Monday, October 21 - Benefit Open Enrollment Meetings: 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Sharecare Meeting: 10:30 a.m.; Health Savings Account Informational Session: 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday, October 22 - Benefit Open Enrollment Meeting: 1:30 p.m.; Sharecare Meetings: 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Monday, October 28 - Benefit Open Enrollment Meeting: 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, October 30 - Benefit Open Enrollment Meetings: 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Health Savings Account Informational Session: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Benefit Open Enrollment Meeting: All benefit-eligible employees are invited and encouraged to attend the Open Enrollment meetings for benefits starting January 1, 2020. Please plan on attending a session where you will learn more about the new changes for benefit offerings in 2020. Leaders from insurance broker NFP and Blue Cross Blue Shield will be on hand to help answer questions you may have. Reminder that the window to enroll online for 2020 benefits is between October 21 through November 6.
Sharecare Meeting: Plan to attend a Sharecare (a state-of-the-art digital health and wellbeing app that provides a personalized experience in one comprehensive platform) session where you will learn more about Sharecare and how you can earn $20-$40 per month by tracking physical activity through the app. It provides you with direct access to award-winning and innovative technologies, scientifically validated clinical protocols and best-in-class coaching tools. The meeting will include a demo about how to use this tool. Prior to attending this session, it is recommended that you have logged into your Blue Cross Blue Shield account, downloaded the MN Sharecare app and created your account.
Health Savings Account Informational Session: Presented by NFP, this educational session will instruct employees on the benefits to a Health Savings Account, the "how-to" of claim processing, and rules around Health Savings Account usage. Further, the vendor that services your Health Savings Account has a variety of tools online for employees to utilize.

League of Women Voters Candidate Forums...Don't miss your chance to hear candidates discuss issues affecting the Saint Peter area. The Saint Peter Area League of Women Voters will hold two candidate forums this fall. Both are open to the public and offer opportunities for community members to submit questions. The Saint Peter Mayor and City Council candidate forum will be held on Thursday, October 3, at 7 p.m. in the Senior Center (room #219) at the Saint Peter Community Center, 600 S. 5th Street. The Saint Peter School Board candidate forum will be held on Tuesday, October 15, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Saint Peter High School, 2121 Broadway Avenue. Both forums are hosted by the League of Women Voters local league, the Saint Peter Chamber of Commerce, and the Saint Peter Herald. The forums will be video recorded for future broadcast on Saint Peter's community station. Questions from the public are welcome and may be submitted to lwvstpeter@lwvmn.org or spchamb@hickorytech.net.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication. It is published weekly during the academic year (except during the week of Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Touring Week, and the Spring and Easter breaks). Anyone may submit items by filling out an online submission form. While online submissions are preferred, items may also be submitted typewritten on a letter-sized sheet of paper. Send "snail mail" items to: Inside Gustavus, Office of Marketing and Communication. Items must reach the office no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday before publication.
